COLUMBIA, SC– On Saturday night the Miami University softball team dropped a pair of contests to South Carolina and Georgia State. Miami is now 2-7 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- In the bottom of the first, the Gamecocks got ahead 1-0 on a wild pitch.
- The RedHawks fought back in the top of the second when Mckenna Campbell performed a textbook squeeze bunt. On the play, Jenna Golembiewski was able to cross the plate to tie the game 1-1.
- The Gamecocks scored another in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single to grab the 2-1 lead.
- Still in that inning, a pair of walks with the bases loaded allowed two more runs to cross for the Gamecocks, pushing their lead to 4-1.
- The Gamecocks followed that up with a RBI single that scored one and made it a 5-1 game.
- Immediately after, a rain delay was called, still in the bottom of the fourth with no outs and the bases loaded.
- Approximately 30 minutes later, the game resumed, and Shelby Kunkel went to the mound for the RedHawks, making her first collegiate appearance in the circle.
- The Gamecocks then scored eight runs on three doubles, a sac groundout, a single and a sac fly. This increased their lead to 12-1.
- In the top of the fifth, Kaylee Oh hit a RBI single that allowed Erin Pinter to cross home, bringing the score to 12-2, but the RedHawks could not come back from the deficit.
NOTES:
- Oh went 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Golembiewski and Pinter each had extra-base hits.
- Madilyn Reeves went 3.0 innings in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out two.
- Kunkel went 1.0 inning in the circle for the Red and White, marking her debut pitching appearance for Miami.
- Shelbie Krieger also made an appearance on the bump.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- In the bottom of the first, the Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a RBI double and a walk with the bases loaded.
- The Panthers extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second when a fielder's choice allowed two runs to score.
- A RBI single in the bottom of the third put another run across for the Panthers, pushing their lead to 5-0.
- A solo homer from the Panthers in the bottom of the fifth made it a 6-0 game.
- In the top of the sixth, Kaylee Oh hit a solo home run and Holly Merritt hit a two-run homer that also allowed Shelby Kunkel to cross the plate, putting the RedHawks on the board, and cutting the deficit to 6-3.
- However the RedHawks could not come all the way back, and the Panthers took the game 6-3.
NOTES:
- Oh went 2-for-4 at the plate. Chloe Parks went 2-for-3.
- Merritt notched two RBI in the game.
- Oh and Merritt had extra base hits.
- Léa Chevrier pitched the complete game in the circle, allowing just seven hits, and striking out three.
