COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– The Miami University hockey team rallied from a three-goal deficit with seven minutes left in regulation to force overtime before falling 5-4 to No. 19/RV Colorado College in the extra session.
Rihards Simanovičs and
Johnny Waldron collected two points apiece for the RedHawks (3-23-2, 0-18-0 NCHC), who earn a point in the NCHC standings with the result. Drew Montgomery scored the game-winner for the Tigers, who move to 16-13-1 (10-9-1 NCHC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 11:51 1st (CC 1-0) | Colorado College used a quick-developing 3-on-2 to get the game's first goal. Bret Link found Glev Veremyev with a pass across to the left wing, and Veremyev then set up Klavs Veinbergs streaking down the middle for a backhand finish.
- 15:11 1st (CC 2-0) | Gavin Lindberg doubled the home team's lead later in the opening period with a power-play goal, tipping home a Max Burkholder shot from near the blue line. Zaccharya Wisdom initially relayed the puck to Burkholder and also earned an assist.
- 17:40 2nd (CC 3-0) | Miami had several quality scoring opportunities to trim the CC advantage in the second period, but the Tigers struck late to make it 3-0. After a faceoff in the RedHawks' defensive zone, Veremyev grabbed a loose puck and flipped it toward the goal, where Link was able to redirect it into the net. Veinbergs had the secondary assist on the play.
- 4:14 3rd (Miami 3-1) | Dylan Moulton lit the lamp with a long-range shot from the top of the zone in the third period to pull Miami within 3-1. Waldron started the play, skating the puck ahead and then laying it off to Simanovičs, who set up Moulton's blast with a pass along the blue line.
- 9:07 3rd (CC 4-1) | Colorado College answered back with a Tyler Coffey goal five minutes later. Bret Link picked up the puck in his own end and lofted a pass over the Miami defense to hit Coffey in stride. Coffey's shot gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
- 13:06 3rd (Miami 4-2) | Miami began its comeback by capitalizing on a 5-on-3 power play to once again trim the deficit. A tic-tac-toe passing sequence from Waldron to Brayden Morrison set up Colby Ambrosio across the crease for a tap-in.
- 14:39 3rd (Miami 4-3) | The RedHawks pulled within one on Simanovičs' first career goal. After taking a handoff from Michael Feenstra at the top of the zone, Simanovičs stickhandled around a defender and weaved his way toward the net, ripping a shot to make it 4-3.
- 16:27 3rd (Miami 4-4) | Two minutes later, the Red and White found an equalizer. After a strong forecheck by John Emmons and Hampus Rydqvist, Raimonds Vitolins gathered the puck in the center of the rink and calmly buried a shot to pull the RedHawks level. Rydqvist picked up an assist on the play.
- 1:49 OT (CC 5-4) | After Miami had an apparent game-winner overturned on review with 17.5 seconds left in the third period, the Tigers were able to kill off the rest of the RedHawks' power play in overtime. Montgomery eventually scored the 3-on-3 game-winner off assists from Burkholder and Philippe Blais-Savoie.
