RedHawks Fall Short at Central Michigan, 47-46

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Enjulina Gonzalez had a team-high 11 points and Amber Tretter chipped in eight points and a season-high 13 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Miami University women's basketball team fell 47-46 at Central Michigan on Wednesday night. Miami falls to 8-5 on the year and 1-2 in MAC play, while CMU improves to 5-9, 1-2 MAC.
 
How it Happened:
  • Gonzalez opened the contest by scoring the first six points of the game to push Miami ahead 6-0. A three from Ilse de Vries and a layup that was tipped in by Tretter extended Miami's advantage to 11-1. A triple from Emily Bratton and jump shot from Gonzalez gave the RedHawks a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Central Michigan scored the first bucket of the second quarter to close within seven. The RedHawks responded with a 6-0 run to take their largest lead of the first half at 22-9. Maya Chandler buried a three in the final minute to put Miami in front 25-15. The Red and White entered halftime ahead 25-16.
  • Miami outscored the Chippewas 5-0 at the start of the third quarter to jump ahead 30-16. Central Michigan answered with a pair of threes to trail 30-22. The RedHawks held on to a 34-26 lead after Cori Lard put in a jumper and Katey Richason made a hook shot. Central Michigan closed the gap to just four points at the end of the third quarter at 35-31.
  • The Chippewas made it a one-possession game with 8:49 to play in the fourth quarter. A pullup shot in the paint from Chandler, followed by a right-wing triple from Lard gave Miami breathing room at 40-33. Central Michigan went on to score six straight points to crawl within one. With 53 seconds to go, Tretter backed down a defender for a right-hand layup to regain the lead at 44-43. The Chippewas came right back with a layup to make it 45-44. Tretter once again battled her way through the paint for another layup as the Red and White looked to seal the game with just 11 seconds remaining. Central Michigan's Madi Morson scored a jump shot with eight seconds left to earn a 47-46 win for the home team.

  • Gonzalez has scored in double figures in each of the past eight contests.
  • The RedHawks forced 22 turnovers.
  • Lard finished with a career-best six steals.
