OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University men's basketball team opened conference play with a 93-79 victory against Buffalo on Saturday afternoon.
Kam Craft led the RedHawks with 20 points, and five other RedHawks added double figures in scoring. Miami rises to 9-4 (1-0 MAC) on the year, while Buffalo drops to 5-8 (0-1 MAC).
How it Happened:
- The game began with back-and-forth action, as Mekhi Cooper and Eian Elmer knocked down a pair of threes to keep Miami ahead 12-10. The Bulls responded by claiming a 17-12 lead. The RedHawks then used a 10-0 run to get right back into the game. A triple from Brant Byers and a couple of free throws from Peter Suder evened the score at 17 apiece. Cooper put in his second shot from behind the arc and Elmer stole the ball for a transition dunk to help Miami regain the advantage at 22-17.
- Elmer knocked down a shot from deep to make it 25-20 in favor of the RedHawks. Craft found Antwone Woolfolk in the paint for a two-hand slam dunk over a Bulls defender at 34-32. Buffalo regained the lead at 37-34. Back-to-back triples from Byers held off the Bulls at 40-37. Miami entered halftime, winning 46-39, ending the half on a 12-2 run.
- Woolfolk tipped in a shot to reclaim a double-digit lead at 53-42. A pair of layups from Suder made it a 57-43 ball game. In less than two minutes, Craft scored seven points and Byers added a three to remain ahead 67-52. Byers continued his hot shooting, pouring in two more shots from downtown to make it 73-56 with just under 10 minutes to play. Craft made a shot from beyond the three-point line to give Miami its first 20-point lead of the day at 76-56.
- The Bulls closed within 10 points at 80-70 with 3:34 remaining in the game. Cooper answered by banking in a triple to fend off the Bulls at 83-70. Shortly after, Woolfolk recorded numerous offensive rebounds that eventually led to another tip shot at 85-72. Craft came up with two timely threes to keep Miami ahead of the Bulls 91-77 with a minute to play. The Red and White closed the contest with a 93-79 win.
Game Notes:
- The Red and White shot 50% or better from three (17-of-34) for the third time this season.
- The RedHawks committed under 10 turnovers for the fourth time this season.
- Suder recorded his first double-double as a RedHawk with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
- Byers shot a perfect six-of-six from the field, as he knocked down a career-best six threes.
- Miami had six players score in double figures for the second game in a row.
