Miami Tops Lamar 3-0 in Season Opener

NORFOLK, Va. —The Miami University volleyball team (1-0) secured a three-set win in its first match of the season against Lamar University (0-1) on Friday afternoon in the Norfolk State Tournament. With this victory, head coach Dan Gwitt earns his first win as a RedHawk.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first set began with back-and-forth play until Lydia Michelin and Ava Francis put down a pair of kills to extend Miami's lead to 10-8. The Cardinals stayed resilient, as they went on to tie the set at 16 apiece. The RedHawks came close to closing out the set thanks to another Francis kill that made it 24-22. The Cardinals once again tied the set at 26-26. Miami went on to take the first set 28-26.
  • The second set began with more close play, as no team led by more than one point until Miami jumped ahead 10-8. The RedHawks put down numerous kills and a pair of service aces to increase their lead to 17-10. Lamar once again made a strong push at the end, coming within two points at 22-20. Francis, Raegan Lantz and Ana Vetter sealed the second set with three kills to top the Cardinals 25-21.
  • An attack error from Lamar and a Hayden Hicks service ace gave the RedHawks an early 2-0 advantage. Lantz went on to put down back-to-back kills to stretch the Miami lead to 8-3. The Cardinals then put together a run to come within two points at 10-8. The Red and White did not look back, outscoring the Cardinals 15-6 to close out the third set with a 25-14 win.
 
NOTES:
  • Hicks recorded a game-high 35 assists. 
  • Anna McClure produced the most digs of the match (17).
  • Francis led all players with 15 kills. 
 
UP NEXT:
The RedHawks continue the Norfolk State Tournament at 3:30 p.m. Friday against Gardner-Webb.
