NORFOLK, Va. — The Miami University volleyball team (2-0) defeated Gardner-Webb (0-2) in three sets on Friday evening in the Norfolk State Tournament.
Ana Vetter knocked down nine kills to lead all players in the match.
Ava Francis and
Gentry Warrick followed closely behind, as they each totaled eight kills to help lead the RedHawk offense. Warrick also flashed on the defensive end with a game-high six blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Hayden Hicks opened up play with a service ace to give the RedHawks a 1-0 start. A collection of kills from Raegan Lantz and Warrick gave Miami a 10-7 advantage. The Bulldogs evened the match at 16-16 with the end of the set approaching. The Red and White went on to outscore Gardner-Webb 9-3 to claim the first set 25-19.
- The second set started off even at 6-6 before Miami used a 7-0 run to jump ahead 13-6. A number of kills from Vetter helped Miami stretch its lead to 24-11. Warrick closed out the second set with a kill of her own to win 25-11.
- The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-2 lead at the beginning of the third set. Three kills from Warrick and a service ace from Ellie Hanson brought Miami back within one at 7-6. The RedHawks overtook Gardner-Webb at 10-9. Francis immediately followed this up by putting down a pair of service aces to extend the score to 12-9 and force a Bulldogs timeout. Numerous late kills from Hanson helped the Red and White finish off Gardner-Webb 25-21 in the third set.
NOTES:
- Hicks and McClure each recorded 14 digs to lead all players.
- Hicks produced the most assists of the game (32).
