CINCINNATI, Ohio — Miami fell to Xavier on the road Wednesday by a score of 12-11 despite four home runs, including a three-run go-ahead homer by
Anthony Zarlingo in the ninth.
Zach MacDonald homered twice to move to second place on the all-time Miami list in both career (43) and season (20) home runs. The RedHawks drop to 24-21 on the year, while the Musketeers move to 26-22.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MacDonald came out swinging in the first with a homer to right field, his 19th of the season, to give Miami a 1-0 lead early.
- Xavier bounced back in the bottom of the first, taking a walk, and then capitalized with a two-run home run to left field by Jared Cushing to make it 2-1 after one inning of play.
- David Novak continued the home run derby into the second, hitting a solo shot to left field to tie the game at two runs apiece.
- Dillon Baker followed Novak with a single. MacDonald then hit his second long ball of the game to stretch the RedHawks' lead to 5-2.
- In the bottom of the second, Xavier reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third with a single. One run came in on the next at-bat when a Miami error allowed a batter to reach first.
- A walk loaded the bases with Musketeers. A double by Cushing then scored two runs, tying the game 5-5.
- The Musketeers led off the bottom of the third with a walk, and the runner advanced to third on a double down the left field line. An RBI single on the next at-bat gave Xavier their first lead at 6-5.
- A sac bunt and HBP loaded the bases with just one out. Coming out of the bullpen, Ryan Zimmer managed to get out of the jam, allowing just one more run, which came on a sacrifice fly. This made the score 7-5 after three.
- Zarlingo walked to start things up for Miami in the fourth. He advanced to second on a groundout, and Baker walked. MacDonald then walked, taking to the bases for the third straight time. Ty Batusich came up with a sac fly to drive in one run and slash the deficit to one.
- Xavier walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Aedan Anderson added two insurance runs to the Musketeer lead with a home run to left field.
- Zarlingo singled up the middle in the top of the sixth and advanced on a sacrifice groundout. Baker then recorded an RBI with a single up right center that drove Zarlingo in, making it 9-7.
- Nolan Hollis came in in relief in the bottom of the sixth and managed to send down three batters without allowing any runs. He did the same in the seventh after the infield turned a double play.
- Hollis allowed no hits in the eighth to keep the score 9-7 headed into the ninth.
- Batusich and Zaborowski started the top of the ninth with a pair of walks to keep Miami alive. Coming in to pinch hit, Justin Gorski singled to left field, scoring Batusich and bringing the RedHawks within one.
- After a pickoff at third base marked the second out of the inning, Novak extended the game with a single to left field. On a 1-0 count, Zarlingo blasted a three-run home run to right field, putting Miami ahead 11-9 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
- Xavier's leadoff batter in the ninth walked and advanced on a groundout. Isaac Waschmann tied the game with a two-run home run to left field.
- Cushing followed with a home run on the next at-bat to secure a 12-11 win for Xavier.

- Batusich went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run.
- MacDonald went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two home runs.
- Baker went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run.
- Novak went 2-for-5 with one RBI and one two runs.
- Zarlingo went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs.
- Hollis faced 12 batters in 3.0 innings of work, giving up three hits and zero earned runs.
