100 Homers for Spaid and Pair of Wins for Miami

DeKalb, Ill. – On Saturday afternoon the Miami University softball team shut out Northern Illinois University 7-0 in game one of the doubleheader. In game two the RedHawks downed the Huskies 11-2 in six innings. This moves Miami to 44-7 on the season and 25-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Northern Illinois drops to 18-33 (9-18).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • In the top of the fourth, Jenna Golembiewski scored on an RBI single from Allie Cummins to grab a 1-0 lead for Miami.
  • Sami Bewick followed that up with a homer that also scored Cummins and pushed the lead to 3-0.
  • In the top of the fifth, Karli Spaid hit a single down the line to score Kate Kobayashi and widen the deficit to 4-0.
  • An error in the top of the sixth allowed Cummins to cross the plate. Hadley Parisien then hit an RBI single that scored Reagan Bartholomew and Chloe Parks to up the RedHawks' lead to 7-0. 
  • The RedHawks held this lead through the conclusion of the game to take the shutout 7-0.
 
NOTES:
  • Bewick and Parisien each knocked in two RBI in the game.
  • Reeves got the complete game shutout win in the circle, striking out six and allowing just four hits.
  • This is the RedHawks' 11th shutout win of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • A double from Golembieski in the top of the first scored Spaid. Golembiewski later scored on an error to make it a 2-0 game.
  • In the top of the third, Spaid hit her 100th career homer, pushing the Miami lead to 3-0.
  • Spaid doubled in the top of the fifth to score Kobayashi and up the RedHawks' lead to 4-0.
  • A RBI single from Cummins in that same inning scored Spaid and Holly Blaska. Cummins then scored on an error to push the difference to 7-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Huskies scored two on a pair of fielder's choices to cut the lead to 7-2.
  • A single from Golembiewski scored Kobayashi in the top of the sixth. Spaid also scored on a sac fly from Cummins, and Golembiewski scored on one from Maddi Banks to take a 10-2 lead.
  • Still in the sixth, Shelby Kunkel singled so that Blaska could score and increase the lead to 11-2. The RedHawks then held this lead through the end of the inning to take the 11-2 win in six innings.
 
NOTES:
  • Spaid hit her 100th career homer to become only the second player to ever record that many. She also went 4-for-4 at the plate with a homer and three doubles.
  • Cummins had three RBI. Spaid and Golembiewski each knocked in two.
  • Cummins and Golembiewski each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Addy Jarvis went five innings in the circle and got the win. She allowed just five hits.
  • Ashley Hitchcock closed out the game on the mound retiring the first three batters she faced.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks have their last regular season game tomorrow, May 5, at 1 p.m. in DeKalb, Ill. against the Northern Illinois Huskies.
