TOLEDO, Ohio – The No. 21 Miami University softball team shut out the University of Toledo 8-0 in game one on Tuesday.
Madilyn Reeves allowed just three hits in the five-inning game. In game two the RedHawks downed the Rockets 10-4. The doubleheader sweep brings Miami to 42-7 on the season (23-1 Mid-American Conference). Toledo falls to 22-21 (12-10 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- In the top of the third, Karli Spaid shot a solo home run over left field to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead.
- Later that same inning, Jenna Golembiewski doubled the Miami lead to 2-0 on a solo homer of her own.
- A single from Hadley Parisien in the top of the fourth scored Chloe Parks. Another single in that same inning, this time from Allie Cummins, scored Reagan Bartholomew to push the lead to 4-0.
- Still in the fourth, Holly Blaska lined a RBI single down the right field line to score Cummins and further extend the lead to 5-0.
- Golembiewski followed that up with another homer, this time also scoring Blaska and Kate Kobayashi to up the lead to 8-0.
- The RedHawks held this lead through the end of the fifth to take the shutout win 8-0
NOTES:
- Spaid tied the MAC career RBI record with 246 after hitting a solo homer.
- Jenna Golembiewski became the new single season RBI record holder for the MAC with 74 after driving in four in this game.
- Spaid and Golembiewski each went 2-for-3 at the plate and Bartholomew went 3-for-3.
- Reeves went the complete game, allowing just three hits and no runs to cross to get the shutout win. She faced just 19 batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- A sac ground-out from Parks in the top of the second scored Cummins to give Miami the 1-0 lead.
- The Rockets took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer to make it a 2-1 game.
- A fielder's choice drawn by Golembiewski in the top of the third scored Kobayashi and tied the game 2-2.
- In the top of the fourth Parks hit a RBI double to score Sami Bewick and take back the lead 3-2.
- Later that same inning, Parks tagged on a sac fly from Bartholomew to push the lead to 4-2.
- A solo homer and RBI single from Toledo in the bottom of the fourth tied the game up 4-4.
- Spaid hit her 99th career homer in the top of the fifth to also score Kobayashi and take back the lead for the RedHawks, 6-4.
- Bewick later hit the second two-run blast of the inning, also scoring Blaska, and upping the lead to 8-4.
- In the top of the sixth Bartholomew hit a solo homer to up the lead to 9-4.
- Blaska blasted her own solo homer in the top of the seventh to make it a 10-4 game, which the RedHawks held through the end to take the win.
NOTES:
- Bewick went 4-for-4 at the plate. Spaid went 3-for-4.
- Spaid, Bewick, Parks, and Bartholomew each had two RBI.
- Addy Jarvis went four innings in the circle and got the win. She allowed just four hits.
- Reeves went three innings and did not allow a single run to cross.
