AKRON, Ohio – The Miami University softball team downed the University of Akron 13-5 on Sunday afternoon to sweep the series and stay undefeated in the Mid-American Conference. The Red and White totaled 13 home runs in the three-game series. The RedHawks move to 32-6 on the season (14-0 MAC). Akron drops to 18-23 (7-8 MAC). Miami has now won 19-straight contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Kate Kobayashi got the scoring started for the RedHawks in the top of the first after hitting a RBI single that pushed Allie Cummins across the plate. Still in that inning, Reagan Bartholomew homered to also score Kobayashi and Karli Spaid and push the lead to 4-0.
- Jenna Golembiewski hit a RBI single in the top of the second to score Sami Bewick and up the lead to 5-0.
- In the top of the third Kobayashi hit her third homer of the series, also scoring Holly Blaska, and extended the RedHawk lead to 7-0.
- Akron managed a run in the bottom of the third on a RBI single to cut the lead to 7-1.
- Cummins hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth to increase the Miami lead to 8-1.
- A grand slam from the Zips in the bottom of the fourth cut the lead to 8-5.
- An error in the top of the fifth scored Blaska. A homer from Bartholomew (her second on the day) that also scored Kobayashi in that same inning then added two more runs to the tally to make it a 11-5 game.
- Still in the fifth, Cummins hit a RBI single that scored Bewick and upped the RedHawks' lead to 12-5.
- Kobayashi smashed her second homer of the game in the top of the sixth to push the RedHawks ahead 13-5, which they held through the end of the inning to take the game 13-5 in six innings.
NOTES:
- Kobayashi hit two homers in the game, four total in the series. She also had four RBI on the day and went 3-for-4.
- Bartholomew also had two homers on the day and went 2-for-4 at the plate, driving in five RBI.
- The RedHawks hit 13 homers total in the three-game series against Akron.
- Madilyn Reeves got the win in the circle, going four innings and striking out four.
- Addy Jarvis pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit. She struck out three.
- All but two batters in the RedHawk lineup had hits in the game.
UP NEXT: The RedHawks will face Ball State University for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 16 in Oxford, Ohio. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
