Broncos Sweep RedHawks With 17-11 Game Three

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The RedHawks fell to Western Michigan University (WMU) Sunday 17-11. The Broncos recorded a 10-run sixth inning to help secure the victory. Miami falls to 14-19 (8-10 MAC) with the loss while WMU moves to 19-13 (11-4 MAC) with the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In the top of the second Zach MacDonald led off with a triple to center and scored on an RBI lineout by Ryan Novak to send the Hawks to a 1-0 lead.
  • Dillon Baker reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the third and advanced to third base on a double by Ryland Zaborowski. Ty Batusich then hit a sac fly to score Baker.
  • Evan Appelwick kept the offense going with his fifth hit of the weekend, an RBI single to left center. MacDonald then cleared the bases with a two-run homer to right field that pulled Miami ahead 5-0.
  • In the fourth, Baker took an HBP and advanced to second on a single by Zaborowski. Both batters then stole bases to put two runners in scoring position. Appelwick walked to juice the bases and Baker walked in to score on an HBP taken by MacDonald.
  • David Novak then singled to left field, scoring both Appelwick and Zaborowski to give the RedHawks an 8-0 lead.
  • The Broncos got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits.
  • The RedHawks struck back in the fifth starting with a single by Ryan Novak. Novak advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Gordon. Novak then scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 9-2.
  • The Broncos capitalized on five hits in the bottom of the fifth to score five runs and cut their deficit to two runs.
  • Western Michigan brought the bats out for the bottom of the sixth, shelling out seven hits to score ten runs and take its first lead at 17-9. 
  • David Novak walked to start the eighth and advanced on a single by Blake Buzzeo. Novak scored on a single by Gordon to make it 17-10.
  • Appelwick singled to center field in the top of the eighth. He scored on an error on the next at bat, capping off an 11-run game for Miami.

  • MacDonald went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
  • David Novak went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
  • Appelwick went 2-for-4 with one RBI and three runs.
  • Zaborowski went 3-for-5 with two runs.

Miami will face Butler in Indianapolis this Wednesday at 4 p.m. where they will look for redemption on the Bulldogs.
