AKRON, Ohio – The Miami University softball team swept the University of Akron in their doubleheader on Saturday evening. In game one the RedHawks took the game 9-1 in five innings. A stellar seven-strikeout game from
Madilyn Reeves helped the cause. In game two the RedHawks got the win 14-7. Miami moves to 31-6 on the season (13-0 Mid-American Conference). Akron drops to 18-22 (7-7 MAC). The RedHawks have now won 18 straight and have not lost since March 9.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- Karli Spaid got her 24th homer on the year in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead for the RedHawks.
- In the top of the second Kate Kobayashi smashed a solo homer over center to double the Miami lead to 2-0.
- On a sac fly from Kobayashi in the top of the third, Spaid scored and brought the Red and White's lead to 3-0.
- Allie Cummins nailed an infield single in the top of the fourth that scored Sami Bewick and Chloe Parks. In that same inning Spaid hit her second homer of the game, also scoring Cummins, and pushing the lead to 7-0.
- The Zips managed to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI double to make it a 7-1 game.
- Reagan Bartholomew was the third RedHawk to hit a homer in the game, this one coming in the top of the fifth and also scoring Kobayashi to extend the lead to 9-1.
- The RedHawks held this lead through the end of the fifth to run-rule the Zips 9-1.
NOTES:
- Spaid hit two homers in the game to push her career homers to 92, tying her for third on the NCAA's career homer list.
- Bartholomew, Cummins, and Kobayashi each had two RBI in the game.
- Reeves got the win in the circle, going the complete game and allowing just one run. She struck out seven and gave up just two free passes.
- Miami got nine hits and four homers in the five-inning game. They scored in every inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- In the top of the first Holly Blaska hit a two-RBI single that scored Jenna Golembiewski and Cummins to give Miami a 2-0 lead.
- A second two-RBI single, this time from Bartholomew, in that same inning scored Spaid and Blaska to double the RedHawk lead to 4-0.
- Akron got a run on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI double to shorten the lead to 4-1.
- After Spaid was intentionally walked in the top of the third, Blaska hit a deep homer over center to push the RedHawks' lead to 6-1
- In the bottom of the third an error allowed a run to cross for the Zips to make it a 6-2 game.
- A single up the middle from Akron in the bottom of the fourth pushed another run across to cut the lead in half, 6-3.
- In that same inning, Akron took their first lead of the series on a grand slam, making it a 7-6 game
- Kobayashi hit a RBI single in the top of the fifth that scored Spaid to tie the game at 7-7.
- In the top of the sixth Chloe Parks smashed a homer up the right field line to take the lead back for the RedHawks at 8-7.
- In that same inning, Cummins hit a two-run homer that also brought home Maddi Banks. Later that inning Kobayashi hit her second homer of the day, also scoring Blaska and Bewick, and pushed the lead to 13-7.
- In the top of the seventh, Kari Krueger scored on a single from Bewick to up the lead 14-7. The RedHawks held this lead through the end of the game to take the win.
NOTES:
- The RedHawks hit four homers in this game to total eight on the day. They now have 108 on the season.
- Blaska and Kobayashi had 4 RBI in the game.
- Cummins, Golembiewski, Kobayashi, and Parks went 2-for-4 at the plate.
- Ashley Hitchcock went 3.2 innings in the circle and struck out five.
- Addy Jarvis went the remaining 3.1 innings on the mound. She got the save and allowed just one hit.
- Spaid had one hit in the game to take the Miami career hits record with 246. Akron intentionally walked her three times in game two.
