Hawks Sweep Zips in Doubleheader

OXFORD, Ohio – The RedHawks took both games of a doubleheader against the Zips Friday to secure a series sweep for the weekend. In game one, Miami won 15-5 and in game two they won 7-5. Miami moves to 12-14 (7-5 MAC) with the wins while Akron drops to 5 -21 (1-11 MAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • Akron struck first and took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • Ryan Novak led off the second for Miami with a double to left center and advanced on a single by David Novak. An HBP by Tré Keels loaded the bases with no outs for Miami. David Novak later scored on a fielder's choice.
  • A double by DH Ty Batusich earned three RBIs and put Miami ahead 4-1.
  • Dillon Baker then singled to left center to score Batusich and extend the lead to four. He later stole second and a single by Ryan Novak added one more run to Miami's six-run inning.
  • Batusich took an HBP to start the top of the fourth and an infield single by Baker moved him to second. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice groundout and a sac fly by Ryland Zaborowski gave Miami a 7-1 lead.
  • Akron scored their second run on a double in the bottom of the fourth.
  • With two outs in the top of the fifth, Blake Buzzeo singled. Tyler Gordon followed up with another single to move him to second. Batusich cleared the bases with a two RBI double to give Miami a 9-2 lead.
  • Akron scored two runs on two hits to make the score 9-4 after five.
  • Zach MacDonald crushed an insurance homer to center field in the sixth to pull Miami ahead 10-4.
  • David Novak walked in the top of the eighth and advanced on a passed ball. Keels walked and Buzzeo singled to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Gordon sent one across to extend the lead to 11-4.
  • Akron cut their deficit to six in the bottom of the eighth with a single run.
  • In the top of the ninth, MacDonald singled up the middle, stole second and later advanced to third on an error. A single by Ryan Novak scored MacDonald.
  • David Novak then singled and a double by Keels gave Miami a 13-5 lead.
  • Blake Buzzeo struck once more with a two RBI single to left field to cap off a 15-5 win.
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME ONE):
  • MacDonald went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
  • Ryan Novak went 4-for-6 with one run and two RBIs.
  • Blake Buzzeo went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • The RedHawks were first to score in game two as Batusich homered to left field in the top of the third.
  • Akron battled back with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Miami kick-started its offense in the top of the fifth with single to center by Gordon. Baker scored Gordon with an RBI double to make it 3-2.
  • MacDonald then singled to put runners at the corners for the RedHawks. Zaborowski tacked on another run with a single to left center, and Ryan Novak doubled down the right field line to extend the lead to 5-3.
  • The RedHawks extended their lead in the sixth. Tyler Gordon singled with two outs and stole second. He scored on a single down the right field line by Batusich to make it 6-3.
  • The Zips came up with one run in the sixth which came on a sacrifice groundout. They struck again in the seventh after hitting a pair of doubles to trail 6-5.
  • Buzzeo led off Miami in the eighth with an infield single and advanced twice on two groundouts. He then scored on a throwing error to secure a 7-5 lead and cap off Miami's second series sweep of the season.
 
MIAMI GAME NOTES (GAME TWO):
  • Batusich went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run.
  • Baker went 3-for-5 with one RBI and onerun.
  • Tyler Gordon went 2-for-3 with two runs.
 
UP NEXT: Miami will head to Prasco Park for the annual Joe Nuxhall classic starting on April 2. Their first game will be against Wright State starting at 2 p.m.
