Strong Defense Secures Game One vs Zips

OXFORD, Ohio— Miami defeated Akron 2-1 Thursday in a defensive road endeavor to make it back to .500 in conference play. Righty Peyton Olejnik was credited with the win, putting up a zero ERA during 4.1 innings. Miami moves to 10-4 (5-5 MAC) with the win, while Akron falls to 5-19 (1-9 MAC) with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Patrick Mastrian IV gave up just one run in 4.2 innings of play, which came on two Akron hits in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Blaze Buzzeo took an HBP with two outs in the top of the fifth. Tyler Gordon proceeded to advance him with a single and Batusich made it a tie ballgame with an RBI single through the left side.
  • Olejnik came out of the bullpen midway through the bottom of the fifth to get Miami out of a jam and pitched a scoreless remainder of the game.
  • Zach MacDonald walked to lead off the sixth and advanced on a single by Ryland Zaborowski. Both runners advanced on a groundout by Ryan Novak and and again on an RBI groundout by catcher David Novak which gave the RedHawks a 2-1 lead to secure their victory.

  • Tyler Gordon went 2-for-3.
  • Mastrian IV faced 20 batters in 4.2 innings, giving up five hits and one earned run.
  • Olejnik faced 13 batters in 4.1 innings, giving up one hit amassing six strikeouts.

Miami will play two games tomorrow vs the Zips, where they will look to sweep the series. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for an 11 a.m. first pitch and game two is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
