Oxford, Ohio— The RedHawks defeated Northern Illinois 6-3 Friday in the first game of a three game series after a four-run second inning for Miami and homers from David Novak and Evan Appelwick. Miami moves to 8-12 (3-4 MAC) with the win and NIU falls to 7-15 (4-3 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northern Illinois struck first, with its first six batters taking bases. They scored two runs on three hits to take an early 2-0 lead.
- Miami's offense took off in the top of the second with Justin Gorski reaching first on a wild pitch. Ryan Novak then tripled to right center, scoring Gorski. Novak scored on the next at bat on an RBI groundout to tie the game at two runs each.
- Appelwick gave Miami the lead with a home run down the left field line. Tyler Gordon kept the offense alive with an infield single and advanced on a passed ball. Ty Batusich capped off Miami's four-run inning with a single to score Gordon and put Miami ahead 4-2 after two.
- David Novak gave Miami an insurance run with a home run in the third, making the score 5-3.
- Gorski walked and Ryan Novak took an HBP to start the fifth, and both advanced on a passed ball. Gorski scored on a balk to give Miami their final run of the game and finalize a 6-3 win.
MIAMI GAME NOTES
- Gordon went 2-for-3 with one run.
- Peyton Olejnik faced 21 batters in 5.2 innings, giving up three hits and zero earned runs.

Game two vs the Huskies will start at 1 p.m. tomorrow. The game will be in Oxford, however, Miami will play as the away team.
