OXFORD, Ohio— Miami claimed a series victory against the Huskies of Northern Illinois Saturday with a 7-4 final score in game two of three. The win was highlighted by
Carson Byers' time on the mound, where he allowed no hits during more than four innings of work. Miami moves to 9-12 with the win (4-4 MAC) and NIU falls to 7-16 (4-4 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dillon Baker singled and stole second base in the top of the first. Ty Batusich then walked and Ryan Novak took an HBP to load the bases. Tré Keels took another HBP, allowing the RedHawks to jump to an early 1-0 lead.
- Leading off the second, Blake Buzzeo singled to left field and advanced to third on an infield single by Tyler Gordon. Buzzeo scored on a sacrifice bunt during the next at bat.
- Keeping the offense rolling, Zach MacDonald walked and Batusich reached on a fielder's choice. An HBP and a walk scored MacDonald and put Miami up 3-0.
- NIU put themselves on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring one run using two hits and a fielder's choice to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
- The Huskies started their offense again in the third, scoring three runs after earning hits on four straight at bats. This gave NIU its first and only lead at 4-3.
- Batusich hit a leadoff double in the top of the fourth and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. A walk from David Novak and an HBP from Keels loaded the bases with one out. Garrison Barile capitalized on the opportunity with an RBI single to left. Batusich scored on the play but Novak was called out at home plate.
- Following suit, Buzzeo came up with an infield single to send Keels across and reclaimed the lead for Miami at 5-4.
- In the top of the seventh Gordon walked. Baker hit an RBI triple on an empty count to send him to home plate. Baker then scored on a sacrifice fly by Batusich, stretching Miami's lead to 7-4.
MIAMI GAME NOTES
- Baker went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs.
- Buzzeo went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run.
- Gordon went 3-for-4 with one run.
- Byers pitched 4.1 hitless innings out of the pen facing 16 batters and striking out eight.
UP NEXT:
Miami will seek the sweep tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be played at Hayden Park but NIU will play as the home team.
