No. 5 North Dakota Tops Miami in Game 1

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The Miami University hockey team dropped Game 1 of a best-of-three NCHC quarterfinal series at top-seeded North Dakota by a score of 5-1 Friday night. Ryan Sullivan scored his fifth goal of the year for the RedHawks (7-25-3). Hobie Hedquist stopped 23 of 24 shots between the pipes for the No. 5/5 Fighting Hawks, who improve to 25-10-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 19:59 1st (UND 1-0) | The Fighting Hawks grabbed the game's first goal in the final moments of the opening period. Dylan James sent a pass from one blue line to the other and found Jake Schmaltz, who fired a long, high shot with 1.1 seconds remaining on the clock. Bennett Zmolek had the secondary assist on the play.
  • 9:23 2nd (UND 2-0) | UND doubled its lead on a goal by Owen McLaughlin near the game's midway point. After Riese Gaber redirected a long Abram Wiebe shot, a diving Garrett Pyke kept the play alive for McLaughlin to tap in on the far side of the net.
  • 10:20 2nd (Miami 2-1) | Miami answered back less than a minute later, as Thomas Daskas sent the puck into the zone for Max Dukovac to retrieve along the end boards. Dukovac came away with possession despite being surrounded by three Fighting Hawks and slid a pass to Sullivan in front for a perfect one-timer to cut the UND lead to 2-1.
  • 12:13 2nd (UND 3-1) | North Dakota added a power-play goal later in the middle stanza to make it 3-1. Cameron Berg took a diagonal pass and ripped a shot wide of Logan Neaton, with Jake Livanavage able to track the puck down on the far side of the rink. Livanavage set up a nearby Gaber, who found the back of the net.
  • 1:48 3rd (UND 4-1) | The Fighting Hawks stretched their lead early in the final period, as Jackson Kunz connected with Jackson Blake in the middle of the UND offensive zone shortly after a faceoff and Blake put a quick shot in.
  • 5:13 3rd (UND 5-1) | The home team added a third-period insurance goal during a 4-on-4 situation. Blake slid a pass to a trailing McLaughlin, who relayed the puck to Livanavage for the finish.

GAME NOTES:
  • Sullivan's goal was the 20th point of his college career.
  • Dukovac produced his 10th point of the season.
  • Daskas extended his point streak to three games.
  • Neaton made 22 saves for the Red and White.
