Miami Shuts Down EMU 48-37

OXFORD, Ohio— Katey Richason scored a game-high 14 points and the Miami University women's basketball team never trailed in a 48-37 victory over Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall. The RedHawks (8-17, 5-9 MAC) forced EMU (6-19, 2-12 MAC) into a season-high 28 turnovers and set a new season-best for fewest points allowed in a game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Hennessey Luu-Brown opened the contest with a three-pointer and Maddy Huhn put in a pair of shots from the foul line to give Miami an early 5-3 lead. Amber Tretter put in back-to-back layups, converting a three-point play on the second attempt, and extended the RedHawk advantage to 10-5 midway through the first quarter. Richason and Cori Lard each knocked in a shot from behind the three-point line to make it 16-9. Richason gave Miami an 18-9 lead heading to the second quarter with a mid-range jumper.
  • After the teams traded baskets back and forth to start the second period, Miami stretched its lead to 28-13 on a Núria Jurjo layup and four points from Lard. The Eagles buried a three-pointer to try and pull closer at the end of the half, but Richason responded with a buzzer-beating triple from the right wing to send the RedHawks to the locker room with a 31-16 cushion.
  • The Red and White started the second half with a pair of layups from Jadyn Scott and Luu-Brown to take a 19-point lead before the Eagles started chipping away. Although EMU scored the next nine points of the contest, Tretter buried a three-pointer just before the third-quarter buzzer to give Miami a 38-25 lead after 30 minutes.
  • Miami put the game out of reach with an 8-2 spurt in the fourth quarter, following a backdoor layup with consecutive jumpers from Jada Scott and Richason. That made it 48-29, matching the RedHawks' largest lead with 4:39 to play. The Eagles scored the last eight points of the contest to account for the 48-37 final score.

GAME NOTES:
  • Richason returned to action after missing the past eight games due to injury.
  • Miami's previous low for points allowed in a game this year was 47 (vs. Bowling Green Jan. 20).
  • Tretter pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
  • Lard led all players with six assists, while Tretter added five; EMU finished with only four as a team.
  • The RedHawks held the Eagles to 1-12 shooting from behind the arc (season-low 8.3%).
  • Jadyn Scott matched her season high with three steals.
