EVANSVILLE, Ind. – On Sunday afternoon the Miami University softball team demolished Austin Peay State University 14-4 in five innings, with the help of six home runs. This dropped Austin Peay to 4-1 on the season. The RedHawks then went on to down the University of Evansville 11-5, again with the help of some strong offense. The Aces drop to 0-5 on the season and the RedHawks move to 6-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- In the bottom of the second, three home runs brought in a total of seven runs to get it going for the RedHawks. First, Holly Blaska homered to also score Maddi Banks and Chloe Parks. Next, Jenna Golelmbiewski homered and also scored Allie Cummins. Sami Bewick finished the scoring that inning with a 2-run home run that also scored Karli Spaid, making it 7-0.
- The RedHawks weren't done with that inning though. Shelby Kunkel crossed the plate when Banks was walked with the bases loaded, making it 8-0.
- In the top of the third the Governors managed to get two back on a triple to cut the lead to 8-2.
- Kate Kobayashi started off the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run. Later that inning Blaska would homer (also scoring Parks) and Spaid would homer (also scoring Golembiewski and Kari Krueger). The lead stretched to 14-2.
- In the top of the fifth the Governors scored two when a batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and a fielder's choice scored another. However this would not be enough for the Governors to come back, making it a 14-4 final.
NOTES:
- Five different RedHawks had home runs, Blaska had two.
- Six different RedHawks had RBI.
- Addy Jarvis pitched the complete game, striking out five and only allowing 5 hits.
- All but two of Miami's hits were home runs.
- Blaska went 3-for-2 at the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- In the top of the second inning, Parks doubled to right field and Kobayashi scored to put Miami up 1-0.
- Cummins then drilled a homer in the top of the third where Blaska also scored, increasing the lead to 3-0.
- In the bottom of the third Evansville evened it 3-3 on an RBI double and RBI single.
- The RedHawks took the lead back in the top of the fourth courtesy of Blaska's solo home run making it a 4-3 game.
- On two sac flies in the bottom of the fifth the Aces managed to score two and grab a 5-4 lead.
- Cummins hit an RBI double in the top of the sixth that scored Parks and Kobayashi, effectively giving Miami the lead back 6-5.
- In that same inning Golembiewski tripled to score Cummins. She then scored on a wild pitch, upping the lead to 8-5.
- Still in the top of the sixth, Spaid hit a solo home run widening the gap to 9-5.
- Blaska hit her fourth home run of the day in the top of the seventh, also scoring Kobayashi, to make it an 11-5 game. This remained through the conclusion of the game to give the RedHawks their sixth win of the season.
NOTES:
- Ashley Hitchcock went three innings in the circle, striking out two.
- Madilyn Reeves went the final four innings on the mound for the RedHawks, allowing only two hits and striking out six.
- Holly Blaska hit two more home runs, to total four on the day,
- Seven RedHawks had hits and five had RBI.
- Only three of the RedHawks hits did not go for extra bases.
