OXFORD, Ohio— Jadyn Scott poured in a game-high 20 points and
Amber Tretter produced her sixth consecutive double-double (10 points and 17 rebounds) as the Miami University women's basketball team defeated Western Michigan 58-50 Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall.
Hennessey Luu-Brown added 11 points and
Cori Lard chipped in 10 for the RedHawks (7-16, 4-8 MAC), who won their second consecutive game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Jadyn Scott scored the game's first points for the Red and White, turning a steal at one end of the floor into a jumper in the paint on the other end. She quickly added a pair of foul shots and another layup to extend Miami's lead to 8-5. The RedHawks ended the first quarter shooting 6-6 from the free-throw line to trail 11-10 after the first 10 minutes of play.
- The Broncos opened the second quarter with seven quick points to stretch their advantage to 18-10. Luu-Brown found Lard for a three-pointer on the left wing to pull Miami within 18-15 with 6:59 remaining in the half. The Red and White closed out the quarter with a pair of layups by Lard and Jada Scott to stay within five points at 25-20 at intermission.
- Miami started the second half with a 10-0 run, grabbing the lead back for the first time since the opening quarter on back-to-back acrobatic finishes by Luu-Brown and then pushing the margin to 30-25 on two consecutive Jadyn Scott hoops inside. Despite eight total points by Jadyn Scott in the period, WMU fought back to even the score at 32-all on a layup with five seconds left in the quarter.
- After the visitors re-took the lead at 36-34 early in the fourth quarter, Miami ripped off 14 points in a row over the next three and a half minutes to take control, sparked by a triple from Luu-Brown. A 2-on-1 break off a steal turned into an intentional foul, and the RedHawks capitalized with four points on that trip. Tretter continued the run with two straight buckets from the right block, including a three-point play. The RedHawks' lead ultimately ballooned to 48-36 on two Jada Scott free throws at the 5:30 mark. The Broncos mounted a comeback attempt, pulling within four points with 1:38 left, but Miami made 11 of 13 foul shots in the quarter to keep Western at bay and close out a 58-50 victory.
