RedHawks Stay Undefeated; Sweep App State

ELON, N.C. – The Miami University softball team pushed their undefeated streak to 4-0 on Saturday afternoon after sweeping Appalachian State University. The RedHawks took a close game one, 5-2. The Mountaineers then narrowly avoided being shut out in game two with a final of 12-1 in the five inning game. The Mountaineers drop to 0-3 on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • In the top of the fourth, a pair of RBI singles for the Mountaineers put App State up 2-0.
  • It was in the bottom of the fifth when the RedHawks struck back. Kate Kobayashi scored off an RBI double from Jenna Golembiewski to cut the difference to 2-1.
  • Later that inning Sami Bewick smashed a grand slam to also score Karli Spaid, Allie Cummins, and Golembiewski, putting the Red and White on top 5-2. This score remained until the conclusion of the game.
 
NOTES:
  • Addy Jarvis struck out five in her complete game appearance.
  • Bewick and Golembiewski had the only extra base hits for Miami with a homer and double respectively.
  • The RedHawks combined for seven hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • In the top of the first Golembiewski and Shelby Kunkel hit a pair of two-run homers that scored Cummins and Spaid respectively to put the RedHawks up 4-0.
  • Cummins then drilled an RBI single to score Chloe Parks in the top of the second.
  • Later that same inning, Spaid homered to center scoring herself, Golembiewski and Cummins to widen the margin to 8-0.
  • Still in the second, Kobayashi doubled down the left field line to score Kunkel. Holly Blaska followed that up with a single that scored Kobayashi to make it 10-0.
  • Spaid tripled to center field and scored Golembiewski in the top of the third, and Bewick then followed that up with a single that scored Spaid and further widened the gap to 12-0.
  • A solo home run in the bottom of the third gave the Mountaineers their first run of the game, making the score 12-1.
  • In the bottom of the fourth Madilyn Reeves went to the circle and retired all three batters on strikeouts.
  • The RedHawks held their lead through the end of the fifth inning, run-ruling the Mountaineers 12-1.
 
NOTES:
  • Nine RedHawks combined for 12 hits.
  • Seven RedHawks had an RBI.
  • Four RedHawks had extra base hits. Golembiewski had a homer, Spaid had a triple and a homer, Kunkel had two doubles and a homer, Kobayashi had a double, and Parks had a triple for eight total extra base hits.
  • Ashley Hitchcock got the start on the mound and allowed only three hits and two runs.
  • Reeves went two innings in the circle, not allowing a single hit and striking out four.

UP NEXT:
The RedHawks will travel to Evansville, Ind. for their next game on Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. against the University of Evansville.
