Miami Drops Series Finale to UMD

OXFORD, Ohio– Minnesota Duluth erased a 2-0 first-period deficit with a flurry of goals in a 12-minute span and went on to defeat the Miami University hockey team 7-2 Saturday evening at Steve "Coach" Cady Arena.

Zane Demsey and Blake Mesenburg scored for the RedHawks (3-9-2, 0-4-0 NCHC). Anthony Menghini and Blake Bechen led the Bulldogs (5-6-0, 2-2-0 NCHC) offensively with two goals apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 7:41 1st (Miami 1-0) | Demsey notched a goal for the RedHawks early in the game to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Artur Turansky intercepted a Bulldog pass in the UMD zone and worked the puck to Demsey, who fired a rocket from near the blue line to open the scoring.
  • 14:04 1st (Miami 2-0) | Mesenburg doubled the Red and White's lead later in the period. Colby Ambrosio won a race to the puck and dropped it off to a trailing Matt Choupani. Choupani perfectly connected on a feed to a cutting Mesenburg, who buried a shot past UMD's Adam Gajan.
  • 16:36 1st (UMD 2-1) | Jayson Shaugabay got the Bulldogs on the board with less than four minutes remaining in the opening stanza. Ty Hanson picked up the puck in the middle of the rink, worked it ahead, and eventually relayed a pass to Shaugabay behind him for UMD's first goal.
  • 17:43 1st (UMD 2-2) | On a power play just over a minute later, Hanson tied the score at 2-2. Zam Plante and Aaron Pionk went back-and-forth once before Plante gave it to Hanson at the top of the faceoff circle to finish the play.
  • 18:33 1st (UMD 3-2) | The visitors struck again to take their first lead, as Adam Kleber flung a puck around the boards that Dominic James picked up in the neutral zone and sent ahead to Menghini for a close-range finish.
  • 4:28 2nd (UMD 4-2) | Menghini doubled the Bulldog lead to 4-2 early in the second period. Aiden Dubinsky collected the puck behind the visitors' net and brought it forward before sending it down the right wall. James caught up to the puck and hit Menghini in the crease with a backdoor pass.
  • 8:06 2nd (UMD 5-2) | Carter Loney made it a 5-2 game with a one-timer from between the circles. Kyle Bettens started the play by deflecting the puck in the direction of Jack Smith, who found Loney in front.
  • 8:27 2nd (UMD 6-2) | Bechen got on the scoreboard 21 seconds later after posting up in front of the RedHawks' net and sliding the puck to Plante. Harper Bentz got a stick on it near the goalpost to keep the play alive and Bechen tapped it home.
  • 17:31 3rd (UMD 7-2) | Bechen collected the game's final goal late in the the third period, capping off a 2-on-1 rush after an assist by Braden Fischer. Plante won the puck along the wall to begin the play.
