Miami, Ferris State Play to OT Tie on Opening Night

BIG RAPIDS, Mich.– The Miami University hockey team battled to a 3-3 tie at Ferris State Friday night in the first game of the 2024-25 season. Conner Hutchison scored a goal and added two assists in his Miami debut, while Bruno Bruveris made a career-high 34 saves in net. The RedHawks and Bulldogs both move to 0-0-1 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 19:58 1st (Miami 1-0) | It took nearly all of the first period, but Hutchison and the RedHawks struck first to take a 1-0 lead. Hutchison started the play in his own zone, sending a pass ahead off the right boards. Pressure from Matt Choupani forced an FSU turnover, and the ensuing deflection off Colby Ambrosio sent the puck directly to Johnny Waldron. Waldron fed a pass across for Hutchison, who fired a shot in the closing seconds of the period to put Miami ahead.
  • 0:23 2nd (Ferris State 1-1) | The Bulldogs responded on the first shift of the second period to knot the score at 1-1. A pass ahead from Jacob Badal found Gavin Best in the neutral zone, and he relayed the puck to Holden Doell ahead of the defense for a quick shot.
  • 16:51 2nd (Miami 2-1) | Blake Mesenburg put the RedHawks back on top late in the middle stanza, taking a feed from Hutchison and driving hard to the net. Choupani kept the play alive as Mesenburg skated behind the goal, and eventually knocked the puck across the crease for Mesenburg to finish off on the far side.
  • 8:21 3rd (Ferris State 2-2) | Shortly after Miami killed off a five-minute major penalty to keep the momentum, Cole Burtch found a shorthanded equalizer off a feed from Doell to make it 2-2.
  • 9:52 3rd (Miami 3-2) | The RedHawks re-took the lead on a power play goal less than two minutes later. A point-to-point pass from Hutchison to Ambrosio led to an opportunity near the goal line for Christophe Fillion. Fillion's first goal as a RedHawk gave the visitors a 3-2 margin.
  • 11:36 3rd (Ferris State 3-3) | The final goal of the evening was an unassisted breakaway for Caiden Gault, pulling the Bulldogs level once more. The score remained 3-3 through a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime, which included several highlight-reel saves from Bruveris.
