KENT, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team (7-12, 1-7 MAC) edged past Kent State (1-16, 0-7 MAC) in a five-set match (25-16, 26-24, 23-25, 27-29, 15-9) Friday night at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
Chelsea Williams led all players with a career-high 23 kills, and
Sophie Crawford also led each team with a career-high 48 assists.
Anna McClure and
Gentry Warrick brought it on the defensive end for the RedHawks. McClure posted the most digs (18) of the match, and Warrick led Miami with six blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Miami began the match with five early kills to jump ahead 8-1 at the start of the first set. Ana Vetter added to the offensive barrage, putting down back-to-back service aces to put the score at 11-4. Vetter and Lydia Michelin each recorded a kill as the end of the set approached to remain ahead 17-8. Raegan Lantz sealed the first set with a kill to give Miami a 25-16 victory.
- The score was even at seven apiece in the beginning of the second set. Miami used a 5-0 run to claim a 12-7 lead and force a Kent State timeout. The Golden Flashes closed within one point at 19-18. Michelin and Williams responded with a pair of kills to slow down Kent State at 21-18. The Red and White went on to edge past the Golden Flashes 26-24 as Warrick knocked down a kill to seal the set.
- The third set was tied at four apiece before Kent State claimed a 7-4 lead. The RedHawks then used a 5-0 run to make it 9-7. Michelin used a couple kills to help Miami remain ahead 12-11 at the midpoint of the set. The score was tied at 21-21 before Kent State ultimately took the set 25-23.
- The fourth set consisted of back-and-forth action, with no team leading by more than one point until Kent State took a 9-7 lead. A service ace from Vetter evened things back out at 12-12. Miami looked to close out the set at 20-17, but the Golden Flashes went on to reclaim the lead at 21-20. Despite a strong effort from Miami, Kent State took the fourth set 29-27.
- The Red and White started the fifth set with a 5-1 advantage. The Golden Flashes trailed 6-5 before Miami ended the set by outscoring them 9-4 to take home a 15-9 fifth set win. The first nine points of the set for Miami came from a kill.
NOTES:
- Miami totaled 81 kills (.283 hitting percentage) this match to set its highest mark of the season.
- The RedHawks recorded 78 assists (the largest number of assists in a match this season).
- Michelin totaled a career-best 13 kills (.522 hitting percentage).
