OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team (6-11, 0-6 MAC) fell short in its comeback attempt, falling in five sets (25-23, 25-14, 23-25, 18-25, 15-7) to Buffalo (9-10, 5-1 MAC) Friday night at Millett Hall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At the start of the first set, Miami tied things up at 5-5 thanks to a Chelsea Williams kill and an attack error from the Bulls. Buffalo began to pull away at 18-10 before the RedHawks stormed back with a 9-3 run to trail 21-19. A pair of late kills from Raegan Lantz helped Miami come within one at 24-23, but the comeback fell just short, as Buffalo took the first set 25-23.
- Miami jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set. The Bulls managed to even the score at 5-5. A Williams kill combined with a Caroline Cermack service ace kept Miami within one at 10-9. The Bulls went on to find their rhythm on offense, extending their lead to 21-11. Buffalo's lead proved to be too large, sealing the set 25-14.
- The third set was tied at four apiece until a pair of blocks from Miami and multiple kills from Lantz gave the RedHawks a 10-6 advantage. The Bulls tied the set up at 15-15 and looked to take control at 18-15. The RedHawks went on to put down a flurry of kills, including an Ava Francis service ace to once again even the set at 20-20. Gentry Warrick and Hayden Hicks combined for a block to give Miami the late edge over Buffalo at 24-23. Ellie Hanson sealed the third set with a kill to give Miami a 25-23 win.
- The fourth set was tied at 3-3 before Miami outscored Buffalo 8-1 to jump ahead 11-4. Williams recorded three kills to help spark the momentum shift. The Bulls approached Miami's lead at 16-14 but fell short in the end, losing the fourth set 25-18.
- The Bulls claimed a 9-3 lead in the fifth set. Warrick and Lantz each put down a kill to trail 11-5. The RedHawks came no closer, falling in the last set 15-7.
NOTES:
- Lantz produced a career-high 17 kills.
- Hicks and Warrick led all players with six blocks.
