OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team (6-12, 0-7 MAC) fell to the Akron Zips (8-11, 4-3 MAC) in a four-set match (25-23, 30-32, 18-25, 22-25) Saturday evening at Millett Hall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Akron opened play by scoring the first three points before Miami used a couple of blocks to even things up at 5-5. The RedHawks began to pull away from Akron after knocking down a pair of kills. Ana Vetter followed this up with a service ace to give them a 16-12 lead. Akron responded by tying the score at 18-18. Williams put down three kills to end the set and give Miami a 25-23 win.
- The second set began with back-and-forth action. A solo block from Lydia Michelin gave the Red and White its largest lead of the set at 12-8. The RedHawks stretched their lead to 19-14 after Williams recorded yet another kill and Caroline Cermack added a service ace. The Zips battled as the end of the set approached, tying things up at 24-24. Akron ultimately sealed the second set, 32-30.
- Akron started the third set by scoring five straight points. Miami responded with a 4-0 run to trail 6-5. A Raegan Lantz kill and a Sophie Crawford service ace brought the RedHawks within two at 11-9. Ava Francis recorded two consecutive service aces to remain in striking distance at 15-13. Late serving errors from the Zips gave Miami a chance at 23-18, but the comeback attempt came no closer as the RedHawks dropped 25-18.
- Gentry Warrick and Breannah Peterson recorded a block in the fourth set to give Miami some momentum and a 5-3 lead. A kill from Vetter and Ellie Hanson gave Miami a much-needed offensive push to extend its advantage to 11-6. With the end of the set approaching, Warrick and Peterson knocked down back-to-back kills to put the score at 17-13. Akron tied the set at 20-20 and eventually ended the match with a 25-22 fourth set win.
NOTES:
- Williams produced a season-high 20 kills.
- Cermack and Francis each totaled three service aces.
