Miami Takes Down No. 10 WMU 4-3

OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University hockey team defeated No. 10/10 Western Michigan 4-3 on Saturday night to give the RedHawks their first NCHC win of the season. PJ Fletcher led the way with a goal and assist as the RedHawks move to 7-11-2 (1-8-1 NCHC) and the Broncos drop to 14-5-1 (5-5-0 NCHC).

The RedHawks defeated WMU for the first time since Jan. 3, 2021 and beat a top-10 team for the first time since Dec. 10, 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 1:48 1st (WMU 1-0) | Less than two minutes into the game, Dylan Wendt gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal. He received the puck in front of the crease from Alex Bump, who was set on the left-hand side of the net. Luke Grainger also earned an assist on the play.
  • 2:50 1st (Miami 1-1) | The RedHawks responded with an unassisted goal from Dylan Moulton just one minute later to even the score at 1-1. Moulton snatched the puck at the blue line and fired in a quick shot that beat WMU goaltender Cameron Rowe.
  • 8:11 1st (Miami 2-1) | Fletcher scored and took the RedHawks' first lead of the series at 2-1 after Raimonds Vitolins picked up the puck along the right boards and found Fletcher cutting to the net. Zane Demsey started the play with a long pass around the boards into the offensive zone.
  • 3:34 2nd (Miami 3-1) | On the power play, Albin Nilsson scored his first goal as a RedHawk to double Miami's lead. Nilsson hit a one-timer off a perfect backdoor feed from Hampus Rydqvist to push the Miami margin to 3-1. Fletcher put the play in motion, sending a pass the width of the ice to Rydqvist.
  • 13:01 2nd (WMU 3-2) | Matteo Costantini trimmed Miami's lead to 3-2, finishing Zak Galambos' centering pass after Chad Hillebrand initially won the puck along the end boards and worked it free to Galambos.
  • 3:43 3rd (Miami 4-2) | Blake Mesenburg scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal as he fired the puck unassisted from along the boards to up the RedHawks' lead to 4-2.
  • 10:34 3rd (WMU 4-3) | On a delayed penalty, Samuel Sjolund scored an extra-attacker goal out of a scrum near the net to pull WMU within 4-3. Sam Colangelo and Grainger picked up assists. Logan Neaton was injured on the play, but Bruno Bruveris came in to make the final five saves of the night for Miami as the RedHawks held on for a 4-3 victory.
