No. 18 Tigers Edge Miami Late, 2-1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Bruno Bruveris made a career-high 28 saves in net, but the Miami University hockey team fell 2-1 in a tightly-contested game at No. 18/18 Colorado College Friday night.

Matthew Barbolini scored his ninth goal of the season for the RedHawks (7-12-2, 1-9-1 NCHC). Noah Laba and Tommy Middleton each scored in the third period for the Tigers (12-8-1, 6-5-0 NCHC), with Middleton's goal at the 18:24 mark proving to be the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 16:17 1st (Miami 1-0) | Barbolini gave the RedHawks a 1-0 lead late in the first period. After Miami captain Jack Clement won a prolonged defensive-zone battle along the end boards, he worked the puck free to William Hallén. Hallén fed a diagonal pass to Barbolini, who knocked it past CC's Max Burkholder and outraced Burkholder to retrieve the puck at the other end of the rink. Barbolini then sent the puck toward the Tigers' crease, where it bounced off the leg of Kaidan Mbereko and slipped between the goaltender's pads into the net.
  • 0:21 3rd (CC 1-1) | Laba evened the score with a power-play goal early in the third period. Chase Foley held the puck in the zone after a Miami clear attempt and eventually fired a puck toward Bruveris that Laba redirected in front to make it 1-1.
  • 18:24 3rd (CC 2-1) | Middleton connected on the game-winning goal for CC with 1:36 remaining in the third period, finishing a one-timer off a pass across from Evan Werner. Laba started the play, skating the puck ahead from his defensive zone to earn the secondary assist.

GAME NOTES:
  • Robby Drazner and Dylan Moulton each played their 100th career games as RedHawks.
  • Miami was 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.
  • Barbolini lit the lamp for the first time since Nov. 26 and moved into a tie with PJ Fletcher for the team lead in goals this season.
  • Hallén's assist was his 10th point of the season.
  • Although CC came in leading the nation in faceoff percentage, the two teams evenly split 56 draws, with Hallén going a perfect 9-for-9 on the dot.
  • Axel Kumlin equaled his season high with four blocked shots.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The RedHawks and Tigers conclude their two-game series Saturday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. ET in Colorado Springs.
