BOONE, N.C. – The Miami University field hockey team narrowly missed shutting out Appalachian State University on Friday afternoon, as the RedHawks defeated their Mid-American Conference opponent 4-1. This pushes Miami to 6-3 on the season and 2-0 in the MAC. App State drops to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The RedHawks got the scoring started early when Paula Peña Martinez scored just under six minutes into the first quarter during a penalty corner, taking a 1-0 lead for Miami. She was assisted by Madison Workman.
- The Miami lead doubled to 2-0 when Claudia Negrete Garcia scored on a penalty stroke with just over five minutes remaining in the quarter.
- The RedHawks maintained their 2-0 lead through the end of the first half.
- Just over seven minutes into the third quarter, Reese Wearren scored Miami's third goal of the game, making it a 3-0 score.
- With just over six minutes remaining in the game, Riley Mazzalupi scored another goal for the RedHawks, pushing the score to 4-0. She was assisted by Mary Kate Barbee.
- App State scored with just over four minutes remaining on a penalty stroke, cutting the Miami lead to the final margin of 4-1, which was enough to give the RedHawks their second MAC win of the season.
