OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team (2-2) fell in a five-set match to Cleveland State University (4-1) Friday night at Millett Hall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first set began with back-and-forth action, as no team led by more than two points until the Vikings took a 14-11 advantage. Cleveland State looked to pull away at 18-12, but Miami stayed resilient and closed within three at 20-17. Ellie Hanson was crucial in sparking this run for the RedHawks, recording numerous late kills in the comeback attempt. The Vikings went on to finish the set with a 25-21 win.
- Cleveland State jumped out 7-3 at the beginning of the second set. Miami responded immediately, with Raegan Lantz and Gentry Warrick each recording a kill to tie the match at eight apiece. Things remained tied at 20-20, before Miami put down four kills and a service ace to take the second set 25-23.
- In the third set, Chelsea Williams utilized two consecutive service aces to give Miami an 8-5 advantage. Cleveland State followed this up by evening the match at 9-9. No team led by more than two points the rest of the way. Ultimately, the Vikings closed out the set with a 26-24 victory.
- The Red and White trailed 12-9 at the start of the fourth set. The RedHawks stayed resilient, going on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the set at 15-12. Miami took advantage of the momentum shift as Hanson and Brooke Jackson totaled four late kills to propel Miami to a 25-21 set win.
- The Vikings found their rhythm in the final set, jumping to a 7-2 start. Despite a strong effort, Miami fell 15-9 in the fifth set of the match.
NOTES:
- The match was tied on 38 different occasions.
- Hanson had a match-high 19 kills.
- Hayden Hicks recorded a new career-high of 54 assists.
- Warrick matched her career-high five blocks.
- Williams led all players with three service aces.
