OXFORD, Ohio-- The Miami University baseball team defeated the University of Akron by the score of 13-12 Friday. The RedHawks improve to 17-31 (11-14 MAC) while the Zips drop to 17-28 (9-16 MAC).
Miami was aggressive from the start. The RedHawks scored in the first and continued to tack on runs throughout the game. The Zips mustered a late inning five-run rally to tie it back up. Trading the lead a couple more times, the Red and White came out on top with a walk-off win, 13-12.
HOW IT HAPPENED:

The RedHawks broke their bats out quickly in the bottom of the first. Benji Brokemond hit a quick single up the middle. Cooper Weiss followed up with a single to center field. After a double steal, David Novak hit a sac fly to center field to score Brokemond and make it 1-0 RedHawks.

In the top of the second, the Zips got on the board and tied it up at 1-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ryland Zaborowski took back the lead with a crack of the bat, hitting a solo shot to make it 2-1 RedHawks.

In the top of the fifth, the Zips responded with a run to make it 2-2.

With one out in the bottom half of the inning, Brokemond singled through the right side. Weiss reached base on an error, putting runners on second and third. Zaborowski followed up with a single to score Brokemond. Novak came up next and reached base after being hit by pitch. Dillon Baker and Evan Appelwick followed, hitting back-to-back doubles, running up the score to 7-2 RedHawks through five innings of work.

Chipping away, the Zips added another run in the top of the sixth, making it 7-3 RedHawks.

For the third inning in a row, the Zips added one more run to the board in the top of the seventh, cutting Miami's lead to 7-4.

In the bottom half of the inning, Appelwick led off with a solo homer to left field. With one out in the inning, Stephen Krause and Zach MacDonald reached base on back-to-back walks. Brokemond followed up with a single to left field. With the bases loaded, Weiss reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Krause and making it 9-4 RedHawks through seven innings.

In the top of the eighth, Akron zipped their way up the scoreboard with a five-run rally to tie it up at 9-9.

Not backing down, the 'Hawks led off the bottom of the eighth inning with Novak reaching first on an error. With two outs in the inning, Brian Zapp walked to put runners on first and second. Nate Stone followed up with a pinch-hit single to take back the lead and make it 10-9 RedHawks.

The Zips kept it going, scoring three in the top of the ninth, making the score 12-10 Zips.

In the bottom of the ninth, Brokemond led off with a single through the right side. With one out in the inning, Zaborowski reached base via walk, putting runners on first and second. Novak followed up with a double down the left field line to score both runners. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Novak scored the winning run on a single to left field from Baker, making it 13-12 RedHawks.
Miami Game Notes:

Zaborowski recorded his 19th home run, increasing both his team lead and MAC lead in home runs. He was also a triple away from hitting the cycle.

Brokemond went 4-for-6 with three runs.

Novak, Baker and Appelwick each had three RBI.

Connor Oliver recorded a dominant start, allowing only three earned runs and seven hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Miami's offense recorded 17 hits.
