MUNCIE, Ind. – The Miami University softball team earned a hard-fought 4-3 win over Ball State University in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday, which secured the series win.
Brianna Pratt had four strikeouts in the victory. However, Miami fell in the second game 10-0 to the Cardinals. The split puts Miami at 29-17 on the season and 16-7 in Mid-American Conference play. Ball State goes to 25-23 overall and 15-11 in the MAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- On a sac fly in the top of the first from Karli Spaid, Allie Cummins scored to take a 1-0 lead for the RedHawks.
- In the top of the fourth, Jenna Golembiewski wrapped one around the left field foul pole to also score Spaid and increase the lead to 3-0.
- In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals scored on a fielder's choice to put the score at 3-1.
- In that same inning, a single to center field brought another run in for the Cardinals. BSU added a run on a sac fly to tie the game at 3-3.
- On a double from Spaid in the top of the fifth, Maddi Banks scored to help Miami take back the lead at 4-3.
- The RedHawks held their lead through the remainder of the game and took the game 4-3 to secure the series win.
NOTES:
- Spaid went 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Kate Kobayashi, Chloe Parks, Golembiewski, and Spaid all had hits.
- Pratt allowed only five hits throughout her 7.0 innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- Ball State started this game off in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer to grab a 2-0 lead, their first lead of the series.
- In that same inning, the Cardinals used a trio of RBI doubles to increase the deficit to 7-0.
- On two different fielder's choice plays in the bottom of the fourth, Ball State scored two. In that same inning, another scored on a sac fly to make it a 10-0 game.
- The RedHawks ultimately could not come back and lost 10-0 in five innings.
NOTES:
- Riley Coyne went 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Taylor Turner, who pitched 3.1 innings, allowed only two hits and struck out three.
