DAYTON, Ohio—The Miami University baseball team fell by a score of 7-5 in a road game at the University of Dayton Wednesday afternoon. The RedHawks moved to 2-11 on the season while the Flyers improved to 3-8. Miami rallied from a two-run deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning, but Dayton came back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Flyers struck first, taking a 3-0 lead after the first inning of play.
The RedHawks responded immediately at the top of the second. Cooper Weiss drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a passed ball. David Novak had the first hit of the game with a single to right, knocking in Weiss. With two outs and two on after an Evan Appelwick walk, Benji Brokemond tripled into right field and tied the game up at 3.
In the bottom of the third, the Flyers scored a run, but Costa Sirounis worked his way out of a bases-loaded situation, keeping the deficit at 4-3.
Trailing 5-3 entering the eighth, the RedHawks came roaring back. Zach MacDonald started the comeback with a single to left field. After a Parker Lester groundout moved MacDonald to second, Zapp smoked a single up the middle of the diamond to trim the Flyers' advantage to 5-4. Weiss followed with a double to plate Zapp and even the score at 5-5.
However, in the bottom of the eighth, the Flyers re-took the lead on a two-run double. Trailing 7-5, the RedHawks got two runners on base in the ninth to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate, but the visitors' rally ultimately fell short.

NOTES

Brokemond led the RedHawks with two runs batted in.
Weiss finished with two hits and drove in his 13th run of the year (one back of team leader Ryland Zaborowski).
Miami's pitchers combined to strike out 14 Dayton hitters, with Sirounis leading the way with five K's.
