RedHawks Fall to No. 8 Broncos

OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University hockey team fell 5-0 to No. 8/8 Western Michigan Friday night at Steve "Coach" Cady Arena. Max Sasson put up three goals and an assist for the Broncos (22-12-1, 14-8-1 NCHC). Ludvig Persson made 26 saves in net for the RedHawks (8-21-4, 3-17-3).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 8:49 1st (WMU 1-0) | Western Michigan started the scoring midway through the first period. Jack Perbix fed Hugh Larkin on his left for a quick shot. Larkin recovered the rebound after his initial attempt was blocked and set up Dylan Wendt near the far post for a tap-in.
  • 10:21 1st (WMU 2-0) | WMU doubled its lead less than two minutes later. Jason Polin got the puck in his own zone and started a fast-developing 3-on-2 up ice. He connected with Sasson in the middle, who laid it off to Ryan McAllister on the left wing. Polin was trailing the play and received a return pass from McAllister that he was able to shoot over Persson to make it 2-0.
  • 7:28 2nd (WMU 3-0) | The Broncos struck again in the second period on a goal by Sasson. After a series of shots near the Miami net, it appeared that Persson had covered the puck, but it eventually popped free to Sasson in the middle, who deposited it into the net for a 3-0 WMU lead. McAllister and Polin were credited with assists.
  • 17:12 2nd (WMU 4-0) | The RedHawks were whistled for two consecutive penalties late in the second period, setting up a 3-on-5 scenario. Just after the first foul expired, WMU picked up a power play goal to take a 4-0 lead. Although Sasson's initial shot on the play missed, he kept the rebound alive to Aidan Fulp at the right point. Fulp found McAllister to his left, who fed Sasson for a successful blast from the same spot as his previous attempt.
  • 9:39 3rd (WMU 5-0) | Sasson concluded the scoring with an unassisted goal in the third period. A long carom off the boards as the puck entered the Miami zone hopped straight to Sasson, who knocked it home to finish his hat trick.
