RedHawks Edged in OT by No. 8 WMU

OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University hockey team earned a point in the NCHC standings but fell in overtime to No. 8/8 Western Michigan Saturday by a 5-4 score. The visiting Broncos (23-12-1, 15-8-1 NCHC) used a pair of extra-attacker goals in the final four minutes of regulation to force an extra session, with Jason Polin scoring in overtime to cap the visitors' rally. Red Savage scored two goals to lead the RedHawks (8-22-4, 3-18-3). Logan Neaton made a career-high 42 saves in net for the home team on Senior Night.

Miami will be the No. 8 seed in the upcoming NCHC tournament and will travel to face top-seeded Denver next weekend in a best-of-three quarterfinal series, with Game 1 set for Friday, March 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 2:33 1st (Miami 1-0) | Miami jumped in front early in the first period. Ryan Savage slid the puck ahead to Max Dukovac to spark a 2-on-1. Skating alongside Red Savage, Dukovac entered the offensive zone and rang a shot off the post. Red Savage tapped the back-side rebound home to put the RedHawks up 1-0.
  • 9:44 1st (WMU 1-1) | Western Michigan evened the score midway through the period with a power-play goal. From the left point, Ryan McAllister set up Aidan Fulp with a cross-ice pass. Fulp carried the puck into the middle and fired a shot that Dylan Wendt redirected in front to make it 1-1.
  • 14:14 2nd (WMU 2-1) | The Broncos took their first lead on a goal by Cole Gallant. Gallant took the puck away in his offensive zone, where Daniel Hilsendager picked it up. Hilsendager slid a pass to Luke Grainger, who fed it back to Gallant at the top of the zone for the finish.
  • 15:26 2nd (Miami 2-2) | Miami responded just over a minute later to tie the score. Dylan Moulton took a pass from Joe Cassetti and ripped a shot from the left circle that Jack Clement retrieved along the far boards. Clement skated forward and got off a tough-angle shot from the right side of the goal past a Jack Olmstead screen to knot the score at 2-all.
  • 5:12 3rd (Miami 3-2) | Red Savage put the RedHawks back on top in the third period with an unassisted goal. Standing on his own goal line, the sophomore center grabbed the puck and maneuvered it forward all the way to the offensive zone. Savage's deep shot from the blue line deflected off WMU goaltender Cameron Rowe straight up in the air and fell behind him, trickling into the net to give the Red and White a 3-2 lead.
  • 14:01 3rd (Miami 4-2) | Moulton doubled the RedHawks' advantage with six minutes remaining. After the Broncos attempted to clear the zone, Moulton held the puck in and whipped a diagonal pass to Frankie Carogioiello. Carogioiello dished it back across the zone to Moulton, who squeezed a shot between Rowe and the near goalpost for Miami's fourth goal of the game.
  • 16:39 3rd (WMU 4-3) | The Broncos started a late rally with an extra-attacker goal. With the WMU net empty, Polin sent the puck from the boards to Wendt in the middle. Wendt found Max Sasson on the far side of the net to make it 4-3.
  • 17:39 3rd (WMU 4-4) | Western Michigan tied the score a minute later, once again converting with an extra attacker. Wendt and Tim Washe both were jamming at the puck in a scramble in front of Neaton, with the puck eventually working loose to Sasson for the game-tying goal.
  • 0:36 OT (WMU 5-4) | The Broncos capped their comeback with a goal in the overtime session, as Sasson set up Polin in close for the game-winner.
