OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University RedHawks went down in the first game of the double header against Northern Illinois University 7-6 on Sunday afternoon. Miami fell again in the second game, 7-2 to give Northern Illinois the sweep. This drops Miami to 14-12 on the season and 2-4 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play. The win brings the Huskies to 13-12 on the season and 4-1 in the MAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- It was the Huskies that scored first in the top of the second on an error to take the 1-0 lead. They then scored three more on a sac fly, a groundout RBI and a single RBI to make it 4-0.
- The RedHawks fought back in the bottom of the second when Riley Coyne hit a single that would score both Karli Spaid and Maggie Murphy to cut the deficit to 4-2.
- On a single by Jenna Golembiewski in the bottom of the fourth, Chloe Parks scored to shorten the lead again to 4-3.
- Spaid tied it up 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Coyne.
- In the top of the sixth the Huskies came ahead again on a two-run RBI double, grabbing the 6-4 lead.
- On a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth Golembiewski scored, cutting the lead again 6-5.
- In the bottom of the seventh the Huskies pushed their lead to 7-5 on a solo home run.
- In the first at-bat of the bottom of the seventh Karli Spaid hit one deep over the left field wall to put the score at 7-6, but the RedHawks could not overcome the deficit, ultimately losing the game.
NOTES:
- Brianna Pratt allowed only seven hits and had five strikeouts.
- Spaid went 3-for-4 at the plate and Golembiewski went 2-for-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- The Huskies again struck first, scoring two on a pair of singles in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.
- In the top of the second the Huskies doubled their lead to 4-0 on a triple and a single.
- They scored again in the top of the third on a single, an error and a sac groundout to increase their lead to 7-0.
- The RedHawks put their first run on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Golembiewski hit a double, and was then able to score on a throwing error to make the score 7-1.
- Golembiewski added another run for Miami on a solo home run to cut the lead to 7-2, but the difference would ultimately prove to be too much for the RedHawks to overcome, giving the Huskies the win and the series sweep.
NOTES:
- Allie Cummins and Golembiewski went 1-for-2 at the plate.
- Taylor Turner allowed only one hit in her four innings pitched and struck out three.
