OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University baseball team rallied back from an early six-run deficit to tie the game in the seventh inning, but Oakland scored twice in the eighth and went on to defeat the RedHawks 12-9 Tuesday afternoon at McKie Field.

David Novak hit home runs for Miami (4-17, 2-4 MAC). Ian Cleary led the Golden Grizzlies (8-10, 2-1 Horizon) with three doubles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trailing 6-0, the RedHawks scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to cut the visitors' lead in half. With two runners on and two out, Novak got Miami on the board with an RBI single up the middle. After a double steal, Nate Stone lifted a two-run double into short right-center to make it 6-3.
- After Oakland put up two runs in the second inning, Miami came back with one in the third. Brian Zapp blasted a triple to right-center and came around to score on a base hit by Novak, cutting the deficit to 8-4.
- The RedHawks added two runs in the fourth to pull within 8-6. After Blake Buzzeo walked and stole second base, MacDonald hit a towering home run over the left field wall.
- The Golden Grizzlies picked up a run in the top of the fifth, but Miami responded with two in the bottom half of the frame. Zaborowski led off by hammering a pinch-hit home run to left to make it 9-7. Novak followed with a walk, scoring later in the inning on an RBI single from Stephen Krause to bring the score to 9-8.
- Miami evened the score at 9-9 in the seventh inning. With one out, Novak ripped a solo home run to left-center to tie the game.
- Oakland pushed around two runs in the eighth inning and added an insurance run in the ninth to finish on top 12-9.
NOTES
- Novak was 3-for-4 with a season-high three RBIs and hit his first home run of the spring.
- Buzzeo stole a career-high two bases for the Red and White.
- Lawson Blackmore threw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, recording six of the Miami pitching staff's 17 strikeouts.
- Evan Appelwick drew his 25th walk of the season, which ranks first in the conference and fifth in the country.
- MacDonald finished 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
