Miami Takes Two From NIU

OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University baseball team swept a Mid-American Conference doubleheader from Northern Illinois Friday afternoon, winning 10-3 and 16-3. The RedHawks improve to 4-15, 2-3 MAC, while NIU drops to 3-15, 0-5 MAC.

Miami starters Connor Oliver and Zach Maxey each went six innings on the mound to earn the victories. Ryland Zaborowski, Dillon Baker and Brian Zapp all hit home runs in game two for the Red and White.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME ONE
  • After NIU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Miami went on top with a pair of runs in the third. The RedHawks loaded the bases on a Baker base hit, Evan Appelwick walk and Benij Brokemond bunt single. Zaborowski drove in one run for Miami with a deep sacrifice fly to straightaway center, and Cooper Weiss worked a two-out bases-loaded walk to pick up an RBI and make it 2-1.
  • The visitors scored twice in the top of the fifth, but Miami answered back with three in the bottom half of the inning. Weiss ripped a long one-out triple to right field, followed by a Tommy Harrison walk. David Novak laid down a perfect sac bunt to score Weiss, and Baker's bloop double into center field plated Harrison to put Miami back in front. Appelwick then singled to drive in Baker and extend the RedHawks' lead to 5-3.
  • Miami stretched its advantage to 6-3 in the seventh. Novak doubled to left field to lead off the inning, moving to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Baker. Appelwick brought Novak around to score with a sacrifice fly to deep left center.
  • The RedHawks struck for four insurance runs in the eighth. After Miami loaded the bases with a Zach MacDonald leadoff walk and pair of singles from Parker Lester and Weiss, Harrison drew a base on balls to make it 7-3. Novak hit an RBI sac fly to center to score Miami's eighth run. Weiss and Harrison combined for a double steal, and Baker's RBI groundout brought Weiss in to score. Appelwick then laced a single to left to bring Harrison home and give Miami a 10-3 cushion.

  • Novak and Baker each doubled and drove in two runs apiece.
  • Oliver (6 IP), Hudson Leach (2 IP) and Martin Sosna (1 IP) combined on the mound to yield zero earned runs and two hits.
  • Leach struck out five hitters and did not allow a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO
  • Miami took an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Zaborowski started things off with a one-out solo homer to right. MacDonald followed with a walk, stealing second base and advancing to third on a throwing error by the NIU catcher. He came home on a two-out bunt by Weiss, as an NIU throwing error allowed Weiss to reach base.
  • Leading 2-1, the RedHawks put four more runs on the board in the bottom of the second. After a one-out single from Baker, Miami rattled off three consecutive extra-base hits, with each plating a run. Appelwick doubled, Brokemond tripled, and Zaborowski doubled off the center field wall. The Huskies made a pitching change, but Miami continued its rally with a MacDonald single and three consecutive walks. The final free pass, to Zapp, drove in another run to give the home team a 6-1 margin.
  • Miami broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. MacDonald doubled with one out, and Lester promptly singled to center. The ball bounced over the center fielder's head for an error, allowing MacDonald to score. NIU committed errors on each of the next two at-bats as well, including a four-base error on a misplayed fly ball off the bat of Weiss that made it 9-1. With Zapp standing on second base, Baker blasted an inside-the-park home run off the right fielder's glove for an 11-1 scoreline.
  • Miami tacked on four more runs in the next inning. With the bases loaded, Lester hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in a run and make it 12-2. Later in the fifth, Zapp ripped a three-run homer that gave the RedHawks a 15-2 lead.
