ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The (RV/RV) Miami University hockey team came up just short in its conference opener Friday night, falling 3-2 at (RV/NA) St. Cloud State. William Hallén and
PJ Fletcher scored for the RedHawks (4-2-1, 0-1-0 NCHC), while
Logan Neaton stopped 32 of the 35 shots he faced from the Huskies (3-4-0, 1-0-0 NCHC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 3:16 1st (SCSU 1-0) | SCSU took an early lead less than four minutes into the contest. Joe Molenaar worked the puck to the end boards, with it eventually bouncing free to Kyler Kupka. Kupka tipped the puck out to Mason Salquist in front of the net for the game's first goal.
- 14:53 2nd (Miami 1-1) | Miami had the majority of the chances in the middle period, capitalizing to equalize the score with just over five minutes remaining in the frame. Michael Feenstra backhanded a pass along the blue line to Axel Kumlin, whose shot was redirected perfectly by Hallén in the middle of the zone to beat SCSU's Dominic Basse.
- 18:25 2nd (SCSU 2-1) | The Huskies nearly re-took the lead 13 seconds later, but their shot was waved off for a high stick and video review upheld the call. SCSU did find a go-ahead goal before the period expired, as Veeti Miettinen tracked down a rebound to Neaton's left and skated it into the middle before firing a shot to give the home team a 2-1 advantage. Dylan Anhorn and Josh Luedtke had assists on the play.
- 17:49 3rd (SCSU 3-1) | St. Cloud State took its biggest lead of the game with just over two minutes remaining. The Huskies worked the puck around their offensive zone patiently on a power play, and after John Waldron nearly stole it away, Verner Miettinen scored seconds before Miami could return to full strength off feeds from Jack Peart and Zach Okabe.
- 19:51 3rd (Miami 3-2) | The RedHawks got one back in the final seconds on an extra-attacker goal by PJ Fletcher. Kumlin fired a long shot that Matthew Barbolini tracked down and tipped to Fletcher for the finish over Basse. Miami got off one last shot at the horn, but SCSU held on for the 3-2 final.
GAME NOTES:
- Fletcher matched his career high with five shots on goal and extended his team-high point streak to five games.
