GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The Miami University hockey team was outscored 6-4 by No. 2/4 North Dakota Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
PJ Fletcher and
Matthew Barbolini each tallied a goal and assist for the RedHawks (4-6-1, 0-5-0 NCHC), while
Jack Clement added a pair of assists. Jackson Blake led the Fighting Hawks (8-2-1, 3-0-0 NCHC) with three points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 11:59 1st (UND 1-0) | Hunter Johannes opened the scoring, as North Dakota came up with the puck on a power play after a Miami 3-on-2 and started a 3-on-1 break the other way. Cameron Berg rebounded a Blake shot and kept the play alive for a Johannes one-timer in the middle.
- 14:32 1st (UND 2-0) | North Dakota added a second goal in the period when Jayden Perron spun loose and worked the puck over to Johannes. Perron took a return feed and threw the puck in front, where it ricocheted off a Miami defender and got past Logan Neaton. Berg had the secondary assist for the Fighting Hawks.
- 7:52 2nd (UND 3-0) | Owen McLaughlin extended the home team's lead in the middle stanza on a backdoor finish of a Blake assist. Neaton stopped a pair of wraparound attempts, but UND managed to maintain possession in its offensive zone to set up McLaughlin's goal from Blake and Riese Gaber.
- 9:19 2nd (Miami 3-1) | Miami responded to get on the board less than 90 seconds later. After a Blake Mesenburg faceoff win, Thomas Daskas flung a pass the width of the rink to Hampus Rydqvist, whose long shot from the right point was redirected by Fletcher in front.
- 10:10 2nd (Miami 3-2) | The RedHawks found the back of the net for the second time in the span of a minute, trimming the deficit to 3-2 on a goal by Barbolini. John Waldron raced ahead to corral the puck after Miami sent it forward, then dropped a pass behind him to a trailing Clement. Clement immediately relayed it to Barbolini, who collected his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
- 12:42 2nd (UND 4-2) | Jackson Blake snatched the momentum back for the Fighting Hawks with an unassisted goal that appeared to come after a UND hand pass. The play stood as called after a lengthy video review.
- 16:21 2nd (UND 5-2) | McLaughlin intercepted a pass in his own end and turned it into a 2-on-1 going the other way. His perfectly-timed assist across to Carson Albrecht helped UND make it 5-2.
- 0:07 3rd (UND 6-2) | The Fighting Hawks scored their last goal of the night seven seconds into the final period on a tough-angle shot from Dylan James, assisted by Albrecht.
- 17:32 3rd (Miami 6-3) | In a game that featured only four combined penalties, Miami capitalized on a 4-on-3 situation late in the third period to trim the margin. Spencer Cox scored his first goal as a RedHawk, firing a straightaway shot off assists from Fletcher and Barbolini.
- 19:58 3rd (Miami 6-4) | The RedHawks fought the nation's No. 2-ranked team to the final seconds, including a goal at the 19:58 mark of the third period. Rihards Simanovičs sent a pass out to Clement for a deep shot, and Mesenburg was in the perfect spot in front of the net to tip it home.
