For the third consecutive year, Miami Hockey opens its season with a series against Ferris State. The RedHawks are looking to improve on last year's 8-24-4 record, while FSU posted a 14-19-4 mark in 2022-23.
This weekend's games in Big Rapids, Mich. are set for Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7:07 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8 at 5:07 p.m. and can be streamed on FloHockey.tv. Greg Waddell's radio broadcast will stream on MiamiRedHawks.com Saturday and air on WMOH 1450 AM The Ticket (Hamilton, Ohio) Sunday.
The RedHawks and Bulldogs tied 2-2 in last season's opener, with Miami earning a 4-1 victory the following day. Miami leads the all-time series by a narrow 48-45-17 margin.
Nine of the RedHawks' top 12 scorers from a year ago return, led by Matthew Barbolini (10-15-25). John Waldron produced nine goals in 2022-23, one off the team lead. Max Dukovac chipped in 14 assists, one shy of Barbolini's team-high, and carries a three-game point streak into the 2023-24 season. Logan Neaton is the only returning goalie who saw action last year; the Winnipeg Jets draftee posted a .900 save % and 3.60 GAA in nine appearances with five starts.
Head coach Chris Bergeron and captain Jack Clement met with the media this week to preview the matchup against the Bulldogs.
