Miami Travels to Michigan for a Pair of Conference Matches

THIS WEEKEND: The RedHawks continue conference play by traveling to Eastern Michigan University this Friday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. The Red and White follow this up with a match against Central Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. 

OPPONENT HISTORY: Miami and Eastern Michigan first clashed in 1979. This Friday will mark the 65th meeting between the two teams. The RedHawks are 46-18 all-time against the Eagles. Miami holds a 23-9 home record, 16-9 away record and a 7-0 neutral site record when facing Eastern Michigan. The last time the Red and White defeated the Eagles was on Oct. 14, 2021 in a 3-1 match. The first match between the RedHawks and Chippewas took place in 1978. Miami is 40-27 all-time against the Chippewas. Miami holds a 20-8 home record, 17-15 away record and a 3-4-1 neutral site record when facing Central Michigan. The last time Miami defeated the Chippewas was on Oct. 23, 2021 in a 3-1 match.

ABOUT EASTERN MICHIGAN: Eastern Michigan holds a 2-21 (0-11 MAC) record, after most recently dropping a pair of matches against Western Michigan. At the head of the program is Kevin Foeman who is in his first season with the Eagles. Callie Minshew currently leads the Eagle attack with 3.65 kills per set (310 total kills), and Elle McLoughlin leads all Eagles in facilitating with 8.08 assists per set (582 total). Defensively, Hannah Howard has averaged a team-high 3.86 digs per set (301 total digs). Angel Baylark is at the top for the Eagles in blocking with 0.80 blocks per set (40 total). Various Eagles rank among top MAC statistical leaders per set. Minshew finds herself at fourth in kills and sixth in total points. McLoughlin stands at seventh in assists and Howard ranks ninth overall in digs.

ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN: Central Michigan holds a 10-11 (5-4 MAC) record, after most recently taking a pair of matches against Northern Illinois. Head coach Mike Gawlik recorded a 20-12 (12-6 MAC) season in 2022. Krystina Kasson currently leads the Chippewa attack with 2.84 kills per set (162 total kills). Claire Ammeraal is dishing out a team-high 8.84 assists per set (796 total assists). Defensively, Aly Gurtiza has averaged the most digs with 4.22 per set (380 total digs). Elly Medendorp leads the Chippewas in blocking with 0.75 per set (53 total blocks). Various Chippewas rank among top MAC statistical leaders per set. Devon Bright is second in service aces per set with 0.56 per set. Ameraal ranks fourth in assists and Gurtiza stands at sixth in digs.

UP NEXT: Miami next travels to Buffalo on Friday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. The RedHawks continue play against the Bulls on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. 

YOUTH MOVEMENT: This season sophomore Ellie Hanson has led the offensive charge, as she holds a team best 263 total points (231 kills total). She also ranks first on the team in digs (237) and service aces (27). In the first three weeks of play, Hanson made the all-tournament team in the Tiger Brawl, Miami Invitational and Redbird Classic. Sophomore Hayden Hicks notched a career-high 54 assists against Cleveland State in the Miami Invitational and was named to the all-tournament in the Tiger Brawl. She has been a key facilitator for Miami, as she ranks first on the team in assists per set (6.41). Freshman Chelsea Williams is second on the team with 2.72 kills per set (201 kills total). She was named to the all-tournament team in the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational.

HICKS EARNS 1,000TH CAREER ASSIST: Hayden Hicks handed out the 1,000th assist of her career in Miami Volleyball's match against Ball State. Hicks finished with two kills and 42 assists between Miami's two matches last week (18 vs. Toledo, 24 vs. BSU) and added seven digs against the Cardinals. The sophomore setter from Frisco, Texas now owns a total of 1,098 assists as a RedHawk.

ECLIPSING 750 CAREER WINS: With a 3-0 win versus Buffalo on Jan. 22, 2021, Miami head coach Carolyn Condit posted her 750th career win. Condit owns a 781-627 career record in her 44th season as a head coach. Owning more victories than any coach in any sport in the history of Miami's storied athletic department, known as the Cradle of Coaches, Condit holds a 682-549 record and is in her 40th season in charge of the Red and White. Condit is the only volleyball coach in the history of the Mid-American Conference to win more than 300 league matches, holding a conference mark of 376-257.
