Miami Tops Kent State in Four Sets

KENT, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team (5-15, 1-7 MAC) won a four-set match (25-21, 26-28, 25-19, 26-24) to Kent State University (5-15, 1-8 MAC) Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The start of the match consisted of back-and-forth action, and Miami gained their largest lead at 11-9 after Kent State made a service and attack error. No team led by more than two points until Miami took a 20-17 advantage. A late kill from Gentry Warrick and a Golden Flashes attack error gave Miami a 25-21 first set win.
  • Kent State jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the beginning of the second set. The Golden Flashes stretched their lead to 18-9 before the Red and White went on a 12-3 run to even the score at 21 apiece. Despite the push from Miami, Kent State went on to close out the set 28-26.
  • The RedHawks came out strong in the third set and claimed a 7-1 lead. The Golden Flashes came within three at 9-6, but a Gracie Norris service ace and Breannah Peterson kill kept Miami in control. The Red and White led 20-14 as the end of the set approached, and Chelsea Williams sealed the third with three late kills to give Miami a 25-19 win.
  • The fourth set began with close gameplay, as the score was tied at 8-8. The Golden Flashes looked to seal the set at 18-13, but the RedHawks didn't give in and used a flurry of kills to come within three at 23-20. Miami finished the set with three consecutive service aces (one from McCrary and two from Cermack) and a Williams kill to win the final set 26-24.
