OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University hockey team won its third consecutive game Saturday night, taking down Canisius by a score of 4-1.
Raimonds Vitolins,
John Waldron and
Matthew Barbolini contributed a goal and an assist apiece to help the RedHawks improve to 3-1-0 (0-0-0 NCHC) and remain perfect all-time against the Golden Griffins (0-2-0, 0-0-0 AHA).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 16:05 1st (Miami 1-0) | Ryan Sullivan picked up his first goal as a RedHawk with under four minutes remaining in the opening period. He had the perfect angle to redirect a Spencer Cox shot past Canisius goatender David Fessenden to take a 1-0 RedHawk lead. Hampus Rydqvist also picked up an assist on the play.
- 19:58 1st (Miami 2-0) | Vitolins doubled the Miami lead to 2-0 before the period ended with a buzzer-beating goal. Barbolini took the puck away from the Golden Griffins on a one-man forecheck and fed Vitolins for a one-timer, extending Barbolini's point streak to a half-dozen games.
- 7:45 2nd (Miami 3-0) | On the power play, Miami capitalized on an extended stretch of time in the offensive zone when Waldron put the puck to the back of the net off assists from PJ Fletcher and William Hallén.
- 8:28 2nd (Canisius 3-1) | Less than a minute later, Max Kouznetsov cut the lead to 3-1 on a power-play goal. He got assists from Randy Hernandez and Jackson Decker.
- 15:07 3rd (Miami 4-1) | Barbolini took an interesting approach to score Miami's fourth goal of the game, ricocheting a shot off the glass for a fortunate bounce off Fessenden and in. Waldron had the primary assist on the 2-on-1 break, with Vitolins starting the play from the defensive zone.
