Miami Falls in Series Finale at No. 4 Denver

DENVER, Colo. — For the second consecutive night, the Miami University hockey team battled defending national champion Denver to a scoreless tie after the first period before the Pioneers pulled away in the middle stanza. No. 4/3 DU defeated the RedHawks 7-0 Saturday night at Magness Arena in the weekend series finale. Tristan Broz scored four goals and Magnus Chrona made 20 saves to help the first-place Pioneers improve to 19-5-0, 10-2-0 NCHC. Ludvig Persson stopped 32 shots for Miami (7-13-2, 2-9-1 NCHC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1:09 2nd (DU 1-0) | Denver opened the scoring early in the second period. After diagonal passes back and forth across the zone from Aidan Thompson to Shai Buium to Broz, Broz finished the play to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
  • 2:55 2nd (DU 2-0) | The Pioneers struck again as Rieger Lorenz and Connor Caponi screened Persson at the net, with Lorenz redirecting a shot from Brett Edwards in front. Caponi also picked up an assist on the play.
  • 5:05 2nd (DU 3-0) | Sean Behrens made it 3-0 later in the period on a long shot from the side wall. After Persson had sprawled on his back to deny Casey Dornbach and McKade Webster in close, Dornbach was able to knock the puck across and keep it alive for Behrens to score.
  • 8:36 2nd (DU 4-0) | The Pioneers added to their lead with a power-play goal. Shai Buium passed to Jack Devine on his left, with Devine ripping a well-timed pass to find a cutting Dornbach in the center of the zone for DU's fourth goal.
  • 10:36 3rd (DU 5-0) | Broz tallied his second goal of the evening as he outraced the Miami defense down the left side and scored off assists from Behrens and Thompson.
  • 16:48 3rd (DU 6-0) | Broz earned a hat trick later in the period, finishing off a power play extra attacker goal off feeds from Massimo Rizzo and Lorenz.
  • 17:33 3rd (DU 7-0) | Denver capped the scoring with a power-play goal less than a minute later, as Thompson and Edwards picked up assists and Broz found the back of the net again.
