No. 4 Denver Tops Miami

DENVER, Colo. — No. 4/3 Denver broke through after a scoreless first period with six goals in the middle frame and went on to defeat the Miami University hockey team 7-0 Friday night. Carter King scored three times to lead the Pioneers (18-5-0, 9-2-0 NCHC) to their ninth win in the last 10 games, while Magnus Chrona stopped all 20 shots from the RedHawks (7-12-2, 2-8-1 NCHC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 0:26 2nd (DU 1-0) | Denver started the second period with a goal on the opening shift. Jared Wright fed the puck up the right side to Massimo Rizzo to start a 2-on-1, with his pass to Carter Mazur leading to the first goal of the game.
  • 1:37 2nd (DU 2-0) | The Pioneers doubled their advantage with a power-play goal by McKade Webster. Chrona made a long pass ahead to catch Miami in a line change, with Webster knocking the rebound in after shots by Rizzo and Rieger Lorenz.
  • 1:46 2nd (DU 3-0) | The home team struck again seconds later thanks to an unlucky bounce off the boards after Ludvig Persson had gone over to retrieve the puck.  Aidan Thompson was the beneficiary of the strange carom, with Tristan Broz and Justin Lee receiving credit for the assists.
  • 6:18 2nd (DU 4-0) | Denver stretched its lead to 4-0 later in the period, with Broz springing King on a long pass ahead from near DU's net all the way to the Pioneers' offensive zone. King did the rest, making a move to his left in front of the net and scoring the game's fourth goal.
  • 6:59 2nd (DU 5-0) | King scored again less than a minute later, burying a one-timer in close off a pass from Shai Buium.
  • 15:05 2nd (DU 6-0) | Miami killed off a DU power play late in the second period, but the Pioneers were able to convert an even strength goal before the RedHawks could clear the zone. Casey Dornbach scored off passes from Jack Devine and Sean Behrens.
  • 4:15 3rd (DU 7-0) | The Pioneers added one final goal during a 4-on-4 stretch in the third period. Dornbach won a race to the puck after Kyle Mayhew sent it ahead, and Dornbach quickly fed King in front of the net to finish a 2-on-1 break.

NOTES
  • Persson and Logan Neaton each made 16 saves in net for the RedHawks.
  • Miami blocked 13 shots in the contest, led by Jack Clement's four.
