AKRON, Ohio — The Miami baseball team exploded for 28 runs to sweep a doubleheader at Akron Friday afternoon. The RedHawks (21-29, 16-18 MAC) posted a lopsided 17-1 victory in the series opener and pulled out an 11-10 victory in game two over the Zips (13-37, 11-27 MAC).
David Novak and
Stephen Krause both hit home runs in each game for Miami, as the RedHawks belted a total of seven homers on the day.
Jonathan Brand went the distance on the mound for the Red and White in game one to pick up the win, while
Patrick Mastrian IV got the final five outs of game two to earn his second victory of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game One)
- Miami pushed across two runs in the top of the second inning. After back-to-back singles from Novak and Parker Lester, Novak scored from third base on a wild pitch. Lester eventually came home after an Akron error to make it 2-0.
- The RedHawks extended the lead in the third. Zach MacDonald's RBI single accounted for Miami's third run, with Cole Andrews then ripping a two-run homer to right-center to put the Red and White on top 5-0. Novak followed with a solo shot to right, giving Miami a 6-0 advantage.
- Miami did the most damage in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs to go up 14-0. Andrews drove in a run with a base hit, Lester picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk, and Krause delivered the big blow with a grand slam to center, making it 12-0. The RedHawks weren't done, as Brian Zapp reached on a walk and JJ Woolwine homered to right to give the visitors a 14-0 cushion.
- Leading 14-1, Miami finished the scoring in the sixth. Zapp was hit by a pitch, coming around to score later on an Akron error. Andrews hit a two-out, two-run double to center to make it 17-1.
MIAMI GAME NOTES (Game One)
- Brand (8-1) struck out eight Zips, allowing just one run and four hits in a complete-game victory.
- Andrews matched his career high with four hits and equaled his season high with five RBI.
- Krause's four RBI tied his career high.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game Two)
- Miami struck for five runs in the top of the first inning. After walks to MacDonald and Andrews, Novak hit a three-run homer to right. Lester, the next batter, was hit by a pitch, and Krause hit a two-run shot to put the RedHawks up 5-0.
- After the Zips scored three times in the first and once in the third to cut it to 5-4, Miami pushed across another run in the top of the fourth. A Brokemond walk and MacDonald double put runners on second and third, with Brokemond dashing home on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.
- Tied 6-6, Miami scored twice more in the fifth. After Krause was hit by a pitch, Zapp rocketed a two-run homer to right to give the visitors an 8-6 lead.
- In the seventh, the first four RedHawks reached base, with Brokemond's bases-loaded walk making it 9-7 and Miami adding a 10th run on a double play later in the inning.
- Akron picked up a pair of runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth to knot the score at 10-10, but Miami responded with a go-ahead run in the ninth. William Escala led off the inning with a base hit, eventually crossing the plate courtesy of a Brokemond RBI single.
MIAMI GAME NOTES (Game Two)
- Escala went 4-for-5 and scored two runs; his four hits was a season high.
- Krause now has seven home runs on the season, while Novak has six.
- Eight different RedHawks scored at least one run.
- Four Miami players drove in multiple runs, led by Novak's three RBI.
