RedHawks Top Toledo in a Pair of Games Tuesday

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Miami softball team picked up a pair of wins on Tuesday afternoon versus the Toledo Rockets by scores of 4-1 and 15-8. The two wins help improve the RedHawks to 17-12 overall and 8-2 in Mid-American Conference play.
 
How it Happened (Game 1):
  • Courtney Vierstra got the start for the RedHawks in the first game. The senior pitched a complete game, striking out eight batters while allowing just one run on two hits. 
  • Both teams struggled to get anything going for the majority of the contest. A run failed to be posted from either team through five innings of play.
  • Toledo struck first, posting their only run in the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. 
  • Miami struck back at the last moment, recording all of their runs in the top of the final inning.
  • RBI doubles from Chloe Parks and Allie Cummins sparked the rally for the RedHawks.
  • RBI singles from Karli Spaid and Holly Blaska followed closely behind, giving Miami a 4-1 lead over Toledo.
  • The Rockets had no answer for The RedHawks' late-game surge, ending the contest in a 4-1 victory for Miami. 
Notes:
  • Spaid and Blaska each went 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. 
  • Seven different RedHawk batters recorded a hit in the game. 
 
How it Happened (Game 2):
  • Brianna Pratt stepped into the circle at the beginning of game two for Miami. The junior pitched a total of seven innings, allowing just three runs on seven hits while striking out six Toledo batters.
  • Taylor Turner and Laurelai DePew both made appearances in the game but failed to pitch a full inning. Turner allowed three runs on one hit while DePew allowed two runs on two hits during her time in the circle. 
  • Spaid put together an outstanding performance from the plate, going 3-for-4 with seven RBI in the game. 
  • Miami struck first in the top of the third, recording four total runs in the inning that included an RBI single from Spaid and a sacrifice fly from Lily Wilmot
  • The RedHawks piled on five more runs in the top of the fifth courtesy of an RBI single from Cummins, a three-run home run from Spaid, and a solo home run from Blaska, giving Miami a 9-0 lead. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Toledo tallied seven runs of their own only after the RedHawks added three runs to their total in the top of the inning. After five innings the score sat at 12-7. 
  • The Rockets would add another run in the bottom of the sixth, but Miami continued their offensive assault in the top of the seventh.
  • The RedHawks finished off their final half-inning at-bat by posting three runs thanks to a sacrifice fly from Spaid and a two-run double from Blaska. 
  • Toledo had no answer in the bottom of the final inning, ending the game in a 15-8 victory for Miami. 
Notes:
  • Five different Miami batters recorded an RBI. 
  • Blaska went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
  • Cummins went 3-for-4 with two RBI. 
 
 Up Next:
Miami returns to action Wednesday afternoon to finish off their series against Toledo. Opening pitch is slated for is 11 a.m.
