Softball Completes Series Sweep Against Akron; Vierstra Reaches 1,000 K's

AKRON, Ohio – The Miami softball team completed a series sweep of Akron on Saturday. The first game saw Miami maintain a lead from the opening pitch, ending the game in a 9-2 victory for Miami. The second game saw much of the same as the RedHawks continued to dominate offensively. Miami recorded 15 runs through six innings, ending the game in a 15-5 run-rule victory.  The RedHawks have now lost just once in their last 19 games and are 32-13-1 overall. Miami senior pitcher Courtney Vierstra recorded seven strikeouts on Saturday and now has 1,000 for her career.
 
How it Happened (Game 1):
  • Brianna Pratt started things off for the RedHawks in the first game. The junior recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts in the contest while only allowing two runs on five hits in a complete game performance. 
  • Kate Kobayashi put on a great performance from the plate, finishing the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base. 
  • Miami dominated from the first pitch, totaling six runs in the opening two innings. Kobayashi recorded two RBI during the RedHawks scoring flurry, helping to give Miami a 6-0 lead after two.  
  • Adriana Barlow's RBI single added a run to Miami's total in the top of the fifth, extending the RedHawks' lead to seven runs.
  • Akron would answer back in the bottom of the six with two runs of their own, but it wouldn't be enough to counter Miami.
  • A sacrifice fly from Shelby Kunkel and a solo home run from Riley Coyne would close out the game in the top of the final inning, ending the game in a 9-2 Miami victory. 
Notes:
  • Seven different Miami batters recorded an RBI in the contest.
  • Coyne, Wilmot, Barlow, Parks, and Maggie Murphy all finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. 
How it Happened (Game 2):
  • Courtney Vierstra stepped into the circle to kick things off in game two. Vierstra struck out seven Akron batters while allowing five runs on eight hits.  With her last strikeout of the day, the senior recorded her 1,000th strikeout.
  • Brianna Pratt came in to relieve Vierstra in the sixth inning. Pratt recorded two strikeouts during her second appearance on the day. 
  • Karli Spaid went 4-for-5 with four RBI and two stolen bases. 
  • Akron struck first, posting two runs in the bottom of the second and third innings. 
  • Miami answered back immediately, recording seven runs in the top of the fourth.
  • Akron answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, cutting Miami's lead to 7-5 just a little over halfway through the contest.
  • The RedHawks added eight runs through the fifth and sixth innings, a run that included an RBI singles from Karlee Juarez and Spaid.  
  • Akron had no answer for Miami's offensive attack, ending the game in a 15-5 victory for Miami.
Notes:
  • Eight Miami batters recorded a hit in the contest. 
  • Murphy finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. 
  • Juarez finished 3-for-4 with one RBI.
 
Up Next:
Miami is back in action on Tuesday for their last home series against Ball State. Opening pitch is slated for 5 p.m. in Oxford.
