RedHawks Clinch Regular Season With Back-to-Back Wins

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami softball team clinched the regular-season MAC championship with two wins against Ball State on Wednesday. The visiting Cardinals jumped out to early leads at the beginning of both games, but the RedHawks refused to be put away. Miami traded runs with Ball State in the first game until a huge four-run rally in the fifth powered the RedHawks to a 6-4 victory.

In the second game, Miami's offense put together a five-run second inning that would keep Ball State at bay for the rest of the contest. The RedHawks would post one more run in the bottom of the fifth to solidify a 6-1 victory.  Miami is now 34-13-1 overall and 22-3 in conference play, while Ball State falls to 20-29 overall, 13-12 MAC.

How it Happened (Game 1):
  •  Courtney Vierstra started in the circle for Miami in the first game. Vierstra pitched just 2.2 innings and recorded four strikeouts while allowing three runs on four hits.
  • Brianna Pratt came into the game to relieve Vierstra in the top of the third. Pratt struck out six Ball State batters while allowing one run on two hits during 4.1 innings in the circle.
  • Allie Cummins put on an all-around performance, finishing 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI and a stolen base.
  • Ball State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Miami answered right back in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Lily Wilmot that allowed Kate Kobayashi to race home for the score.
  • The Cardinals tallied two more runs in the top of the third inning, extending their lead to 3-1 going into the fourth.
  • However, Wilmot kept the RedHawks alive after homering in the bottom of the fourth to help close the gap between Miami and Ball State.
  • Ball State recorded a run in the top of the fifth, but a four-run rally in the bottom of the inning that included RBI singles from Cummins, Maggie Murphy, and Riley Coyne gave the RedHawks a 6-4 lead going into the sixth.
  • The Cardinals could not respond to Miami's offensive surge, giving the RedHawks a 6-4 victory in game one.
Notes:
  • Wilmot finished 1-for-2 with two RBI.
How it Happened (Game 2):
  • Pratt started things out for the RedHawks in the second game. The junior recorded three strikeouts while allowing just one run on seven hits in a complete-game performance.
  • Karli Spaid put on an amazing performance from the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI. The sophomore finished one triple away from completing the cycle.
  • Ball State started things off early after recording a run in the top of the first.
  • The RedHawks answered back in the bottom of the second with five runs of their own. The Miami rally included RBI from Adriana Barlow (single) and Chloe Parks (double) and a three-run home run from Spaid, giving the RedHawks a 5-1 lead.
  • Coyne's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth added another run to Miami's total, extending their lead to five.
  • Ball State was unable to recover, ending the game in a 6-1 Miami victory in game two.
Notes:
  • Spaid's home run in the second inning broke the school record for the most RBI in a single season. She has 60 on the year.
  • Coyne and Barlow both finished 1-for-2 with an RBI in the game.
